...game chatter venting what I shouldn't say on the blog...

What in the holy #### is wrong with all you people? Ten games and you're talking about giving up? Ten games and you're calling average players worthless and proposing the club trade Youkilis and fire the manager and put Daniel Nava in center field?

I get venting - I'm venting right now! - but is every ####### Red Sox thread going to be filled with bad arguments and hair-pulling illogic? I really ####### hope the Red Sox win some games, because it's going to drive me insane.

Jesus Christ, Salty...
   3. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:15 PM (#4112336)
One way of looking at it.

In a seven-game playoff series between evenly matched clubs, the team with home field advantage will win about 52% of the time. If they lose the first game, their chances of winning the series drop to about 34%.

This is about what's happened to the Sox playoff chances so far. If you don't freak out after losing Game 1, don't freak out after losing a couple extra games in the first two weeks.

It would really be nice to hang a crooked number on Garcia.

I really do like Sweeney, but losing Reddick to get him really bothers me.

I kind of like agitated MCoA, he's not usually that worked up.
   7. Dan Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:23 PM (#4112341)
I feel the same way he does. The one thing that especially bothers me is the clamoring to trade Youkilis for pennies on the dollar since he's had a slow start. Obviously he's cooked, right? No good player has ever had a bad 2 weeks to start the season.
   8. Dan Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:25 PM (#4112342)
Joe Buck's yelling on Gonzalez's double scared my cat.
   9. Cowboy Popup Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:26 PM (#4112344)
Joe Buck will talk about anything other than baseball when he does these games.
   10. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:27 PM (#4112345)
I'm only half-listening to Buck, what the hell was he talking about with high cholesterol and donuts? Was that about him? Or Ortiz?

Incidentally, I had thought that Hughes was going to be the odd man out when Pettitte came back because he could be more easily moved to the bullpen, but I'm beginning to think that Garcia is cooked.

Ortiz has been cooked several times in the past few years.

Good to see them hitting a guy who they should hit well.
   13. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:29 PM (#4112349)
MCoA - intellectually I agree with you. As a Red Sox fan though the last month and a half of competitive baseball have been dreary and the off-season saw the two best at their "position" leave the Sox in Theo and Tito.

FWIW I'm certainly not giving up on this team but I will concede to a high degree of pessimism but I'm trying to at least be rational on the threads but on the chatters I reserve the right to go a full-Coorey until we start winning some games.
   14. Dan Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:30 PM (#4112351)
Yes you would think a fan base who has watched Ortiz look cooked in April for 3 of the past 5 years would be familiar with the concept of sticking with a guy with a proven track record through a cold spell to start the year. And Youkilis hasn't looked half as bad as Ortiz looked during those awful Aprils.
   15. plink Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:32 PM (#4112353)
MCoA, I'm totally with you. On the other hand, I felt the same way with 10 games to go in 2011.
   16. Dan Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:36 PM (#4112356)
Where did that miss, exactly?
   17. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:40 PM (#4112357)
Think we got a bit of a break on the 3-2 pitch. I thought the 2-2 was low.

   25. Dan Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:53 PM (#4112373)
I suspect that's it for Garcia.

Yup. Rapada coming in.

Well, in the department of things I was very wrong about--hello, Ozzie Guillen and Colter Bean!--I thought letting Colon walk and re-signing Garcia was the right move.

Of course. Chatter is chatter. (that's why I decided to drop my f bombs here.) I was pissed because it felt like that stuff had taken over all the Sox threads on the main board.

Go Felix!

Jose, quite well.

Been exceptionally busy - even struggling to see the night games right now. In the midst of one of best April's business wise in 2-3 years (don't worry Jan to March ####### sucked) - really miss chatter to be honest - but sort of glad I am missing games they suck in.

How have you been mate?
   37. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 21, 2012 at 05:18 PM (#4112393)
Pretty good . The mild weather has been a real boon to my mood.

Why are Buck and McCarver praising Phelps so much? Because of one relief appearance last week?

Glad to hear things have perked up business-wise. Otherwise I might have had to make another trip to perk things up.

Incidentally, I've switched to Top Gear on DVR so if anyone hits an inside-the-park grand slam or something, let me know.

Long way to go but thanks mate - three day beer festival and a few other goodies have the place humming along. Thankfully after a slow start to the year , I am not thinking that I am done as Buck and Fukarver are suggesting....

(Brief Sox Chatterers social aside!)

I meant to post something before last Sunday's game just in case anyone else from Chatter was going, but the girlfriend and I went to the game...last Sunday. (There was probably a less awkward way to phrase that sentence.) It was her first Sox game and first baseball game in general. I think she enjoyed the atmosphere even though she's not much of a sports person. She was also bemused by the existence of the 'Yankees Suck' chant even with the Sox playing another team.

More to the point (for Phil at least), we had gone down on Saturday and we ate at The Publick House. I had the Trappistes Rochefort 10 and holy #### that beer was amazing. It definitely lived up to its reputation for me.
   43. Dan Posted: April 21, 2012 at 05:30 PM (#4112402)

Just an insanely great beer - all times of amazing and probably my favourite Belgian beer

Here's a funny (shady) Rochefort story - my rep gave me 6 of their glasses for the first time ever ..."just give them to your best customers or use them at the pub"

Yeah Right

Sold each and every one for $40 bucks each and used the cash for our holiday

Win win !

I took my girlfriend to the Yankee game on Thursday. She'd been to baseball games before but never a Yankee game and never with me. It would have been nice had it been 15 degrees warmer, but I managed to not reveal just what a dork/obsessive I am, so she expressed an interest in going again. Although that might have largely been attributable to the presence of garlic fries.

   52. Dan Posted: April 21, 2012 at 05:43 PM (#4112414)
I assume they're just being cautious with Youkilis given the 7 run lead.

Bard to the bullpen? They have to be at least discussing it. With a seven...oops nine, run lead I don't trust this bullpen

   62. Dan Posted: April 21, 2012 at 06:20 PM (#4112442)
Why is Padilla pitching with an 8 run lead? He's been one of the only good relievers for this team.

I'm sure they are, but I'm equally sure it is because a huge comeback and a close game is a far better thing for them professionally than out of any rooting interest.

Yes, I've never felt more relief than when Bernie's ball sailed past Manny Ramirez to (probably) ice the game. The four Mets fans I was watching the game with were getting more and more insufferable with each passing moment.

Soriano is not a great bet to keep this a one run game.

Can we just admit that the Sox are going to be lucky to be a .500 team this year? They are terrible, that inning was utterly predictable. Why is Valentine taking heat while Cherington is under the radar? This is a ludicrous bullpen he has put together.

There is zero chance we are winning this game.

Joba really was a big loss. He's nothing brilliant but watching Soriano get these innings is enraging.
