2006 HOF Results: Blyleven, Gossage, and Trammell are the BTF Picks!
Chosen last year as worthy of election (part of a group that included HOF inductees Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg), pitching star Bert Blyleven was easily picked again with a more than impressive 96% of the 102 ballots cast this year (only 74 more ballots than last year :-). Blyleven also received a robust 96% in 2005.
Another BTF pick of last year, fireman par excellance Rich “Goose” Gossage, easily passed the 75% threshold with our group. He had 87% of our electorate’s support (he had 93% last year).
The final selection was another 2005 BTF pick, stellar Tiger shortstop Alan Trammell. He made a fine showing with 81% of all ballots (he had 79% last year).
Newbies Will Clark and Albert Belle led the group of candidates who weren’t selected, but they were far away from the magic 75% needed to be inducted.
Rounding out the top-ten were: Andre Dawson (his 33% was almost double of what he earned last year), Bruce Sutter, Tommy John (most likely his last year on a ballot as a non-write-in), Jim Rice, and Lee Smith.
Dwight Evans and Bobby Grich had the honor of placing on the most ballots as a write-in (4 out of 12 ballots that included a write-in). Ted Simmons and Lou Whitaker had that distinction in 2005.
How will the BBWAA compare?
Thanks to everyone who submitted a ballot or joined in the discussion!

1. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: January 10, 2006 at 02:04 AM (#1813479)Clark was very close to 75% with 69%.
I voted for Bly and Gossage. I don't remember anything about Bly, and most of my observation of Gossage was when he was just staying on, albeit with a couple of decent years.
Blyleven took a big jump all the way up to 53%. He might actually be inducted before his eligibility expires.
-That having four-digit career innings totals is meaningful, but having three-digit totals is not. (Sutter vs. Wetteland)
-That being closer to 1000 relief innings is better than being closer to 1500 (Sutter vs. Gossage and Smith)
-That just because you are a surly left fielder with a dominant ten-year stretch doesn't guarantee you many votes (Rice receiving 297 more votes than Belle)
-That being the best player in your league for a five to eight year period is just enough to get you booted off of the Hall of Fame ballot (Will Clark)
-That Alan Trammell must be a war criminal---how else would he have finished behind the tattered remains of Steve Garvey's reputation?
-That among two superficially similar careers, the one spent in NYC is greatly preferable to the one spent in SF (Mattingly vs. Clark)
-That at least five writers should seriously consider turning their voting card in. C'mon, Weiss gets a vote? Jeffries gets two? And worse yet, Hal Morris gets five???? How many unsourced "one clubhouse source indicates that..." stories did these voters owe favors on that they felt compelled to vote for these guys?
-That even the worst Hall voters weren't fooled by Gary Discarcina. Good for them.
I just thought we were voting for the 10 we'd pick if it were a real BBWAA style election, I just listed them, no ranking. I also didn't realize write-ins were allowed . . . ugh. We need to do a better job of defining the process next year, if I didn't even understand it (not because I'm smart, but because I'm supposed to know this stuff :-))
I can see the totals were just one point each - but I don't think the 1-10 makes sense - I certainly can't be the only one here who just listed 10, without regard for order, right?
I think that John did that simply because that iw what our vote tallier looks like. No real difference between that style and a simple counter for this exercise.
And to everyone,
The BBWAA has gone and embarrassed itself again. Clark gets booted off, Dawson and Rice (two marginal at best candidates) get high vote totals, and the wrong closer gets in. Of the four guys in the Coop (Hoyt, Eck, Rollie, and Sutt) one coudl argue only one is a real HOF/HOMer and that is Hoyt. The BBWAA is slowly turning into the Veterans committee. I count five real borderline or below cases (Perez, Puckett, Eck, Smith, Sutter) in the last few years with Dawson and Rice on the way. All of this and Blyleven, Trammell, and Gossage are still on the outside looking in. I am really glad we are doing what we are doing.
On the bright side Sutter hails from Lancaster County, Pa. just like me and his nephew once struck me out (not too hard to do). Somehow Tom Herr is more famous around here, though. My dad wasn't aware that Sutter was even from teh area and he has lived there his whole life (for the most part).
Mark is right, Joe.
BTW, Will Clark being eliminated from the ballot in his first year, while lesser players still remain, is a joke and a travesty.
