Mock Hall of Fame Ballot 2019

IMPORTANT: Please read:

This election should follow BBWAA rules, not Hall of Merit rules. However, we hope to see only players that each voter feels belong on their ballots. Leaving 1st-year candidates off your ballot is also frowned upon. IOW, we would like to see an absence of some of the silliness that permeates Hall of Fame voting by the writers.

The election will end on Monday, December 10, 2018 (1 PM EST). Results will be posted a short time later.

Please don’t post any vote tallies on this thread.

Here are some of the rules by the BBWAA that pertain to our electorate:

3. Eligible Candidates — Candidates to be eligible must meet the following requirements:
A. A baseball player must have been active as a player in the Major Leagues at some time during a period beginning twenty (20) years before and ending five (5) years prior to election.
B. Player must have played in each of ten (10) Major League championship seasons, some part of which must have been within the period described in 3 (A).
C. Player shall have ceased to be an active player in the Major Leagues at least five (5) calendar years preceding the election but may be otherwise connected with baseball.
D. In case of the death of an active player or a player who has been retired for less than five (5) full years, a candidate who is otherwise eligible shall be eligible in the next regular election held at least six (6) months after the date of death or after the end of the five (5) year period, whichever occurs first.
E. Any player on Baseball’s ineligible list shall not be an eligible candidate.

4. Method of Election
A. BBWAA Screening Committee — A Screening Committee consisting of baseball writers will be appointed by the BBWAA. This Screening Committee shall consist of six members, with two members to be elected at each Annual Meeting for a three-year term. The duty of the Screening Committee shall be to prepare a ballot listing in alphabetical order eligible candidates who (1) received a vote on a minimum of five percent (5%) of the ballots cast in the preceding election or (2) are eligible for the first time and are nominated by any two of the six members of the BBWAA Screening Committee.
B. Electors may vote for as few as zero (0) and as many as ten (10) eligible candidates deemed worthy of election. Write-in votes are not permitted.
C. Any candidate receiving votes on seventy-five percent (75%) of the ballots cast shall be elected to membership in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

5. Voting — Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.

Voting an alphabetical ballot will make it easier to tally votes

Same question as snapper.

Also, so this is not the same list as the BBWAA votes on, since Santana is included?

While I await a ruling, here is a provisional ballot:

1. Barry Bonds
2. Roger Clemens
3. Roy Halladay
4. Edgar Martinez
5. Mike Mussina
6. Manny Ramirez
7. Mariano Rivera
8. Scott Rolen
9. Gary Sheffield
10. Larry Walker

Can anyone vote here or just HoM voters?

Anybody can vote here. And, for that matter, anybody can become a "HoM voter" by simply posting a draft ballot in the 2019 HOM Discussion Thread.

I originally typed that I felt like HOF ballot glut seemed to be easing so that I was at least starting to feel like it was just borderline guys that I'm leaving off. But then, working through the ballot, I still ran into 2 or 3 trade-offs where I felt like I had to choose between a guy who was more likely to actually be elected or whose time on the ballot was running out versus another guy who I thought was perhaps a bit more qualified. So, I guess there still is a glut of guys who I would consider "no-brainers".

My ballot (in alphabetical order as requested) - which, skimming through the thread, we're going to elect these 10 guys, aren't we:

Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Roy Halladay
Edgar Martinez
Mike Mussina
Manny Ramirez
Mariano Rivera
Scott Rolen
Curt Schilling
Larry Walker

Lance Berkman
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Roy Halladay
Edgar Martinez
Mike Mussina
Mariano Rivera
Scott Rolen
Curt Schilling
Larry Walker

Would also vote for -
Todd Helton
Jeff Kent
Roy Oswalt
Andy Pettitte
Billy Wagner
Gary Sheffield

I don't think that Damon, Moyer, Matsui, and Santana are still eligible this year.
   14. Kiko Sakata Posted: December 06, 2018 at 12:29 PM (#5794622)
Also, so this is not the same list as the BBWAA votes on, since Santana is included?

I assume that's a typo - failure to remove guys who dropped off of last year's ballot. In addition to Santana, I'm pretty sure at least Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Jamie Moyer, and Kevin Millwood were on last year's ballot but are not on this year's.

That's 10. I could be persuaded for -

Fred McGriff
Jamie Moyer
Mike Mussina
Andy Pettitte
Mariano Rivera
Curt Schilling
Gary Sheffield

(Moyer wasn't the greatest, but he was unique. I really wanted to squeeze him into the top 10, but I just couldn't knock anyone else out.)
   19. Rusty Priske Posted: December 06, 2018 at 12:58 PM (#5794642)
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Roy Halladay
Edgar Martinez
Mike Mussina

If I had an unlimited ballot:

Andruw Jones
Todd Helton
Gary Sheffield
Andy Pettitte

No way, no how:

Helton, Kent, Jones, Rolen and Sheffield should be on there as well
I'd also consider McGriff, Pettitte and Wagner if the ballot wasn't so crowded

Anyone can vote. I will edit the list to match the official HoF vote

Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Roy Halladay
Edgar Martinez
Fred McGriff

Scott Rolen
Curt Schilling
Sammy Sosa
Larry Walker

Can I have a second ballot? There's another 10 names I want to add. To be totally honest, by the time I was down to ~15 names, I started cutting off various random factors. There's just no way. Yeah, it produces a ballot with four former Blue Jays, and a Canadian - that's bias, and it averages out over the vote.
   24. QLE Posted: December 06, 2018 at 02:19 PM (#5794696)
My ballot:

Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Roy Halladay
Todd Helton
Edgar Martinez
Mike Mussina
Mariano Rivera
Scott Rolen
Curt Schilling
Larry Walker

With an unlimited ballot:

Manny Ramirez
Sammy Sosa

Dependent on the relative reliability of fielding statistics:

Andruw Jones
Gary Sheffield

Notables among the noes:

Lance Berkman: Comes closest of the noes- one more great season would have put him over the line.
Jeff Kent: Three great seasons, but not really that much else. Somewhat overrated due to his home runs. Case not aided by pile of superior second basemen who will be up for consideration in the next decade.
Fred McGriff: Compiler, in the Clark/Perez/Ortiz/Cepeda mode.
Roy Oswalt: Was clearly heading that way- then things fell apart...
Andy Pettitte: Tommy John, version 2.0.

Bonds
Clemens
Halladay
Martinez
Mussina
Ramirez

Walker

These last ten elections (except for 2012) have seen 4-5 good new candidates every year. In the next four elections the rate of strong candidates will be only a third of that.

It pained me to not put Edgar on, but he's #11 on a 10-man list and I'm not going to strategically vote. I'd also like to vote for Helton, Kent, Pettitte, Santana, Sheffield, and Sosa. Lance Berkman is extremely close for me. Right not, I lean towards "out", but he's very borderline and I could be convinced on "in" in the future.

@28: I’m dropping him to the bottom for Character Clause based reasons. As far as I’m concerned, anyone who makes physical threats against the voting base is going to go to the end of the line, no matter how deserving he is. He is qualified stat-wise, but I see no reason to reward him with a spot in my ballot until there are 10 or fewer deserving candidates I’d vote for. YMMV.
