New Record for names on a ballot with 34!

14 ballots is the most since the 1987 ballot which is over 25 ballots ago, great to see participation increase.

Congratulations to Will Clark on being named the 1989 MMP. Clark is only the second first baseman to win this award, following the 1977 victory by Rod Carew (though, to be fair, we haven't covered the careers of great first basemen like Cap Anson, Lou Gehrig or Frank Thomas yet). Clark is also the first winner after several years of split elections to receive more than 50% of 1st place votes since Dwight Gooden in 1985.

Edit: This is also the second straight NL position player MMP for Clark after finishing 4th overall in 1988.

Congratulations to Bret Saberhagen on being named the 1989 AL MMP and pitching MMP. Saberhagen ties a feat previously performed by Jim Palmer who was the pitching MMP and AL MMP while finishing 2nd overall in 1975. Saberhagen is the first Royal to win the pitching MMP and the second Royal to win the AL MMP (George Brett won in '76 and '80).

Congratulations to Rickey Henderson, the AL position player MMP for 1989. Something tells me that there are greater things in store for Rickey. This is the second straight victory for the A's, following Jose Canseco's MMP performance in 1988. Rickey is also the first left fielder to win this award since Jim Rice in 1978.

Finally, congratulations to Orel Hershiser, the NL pitching MMP for 1989. This is the third straight victory for Hershiser in this category. He won the '87 award in a tie-breaker over teammate Bob Welch and he took home the overall pitching MMP in '88. Hershiser is the first pitcher to win this award three times in a row since Bob Gibson ('68-'70).
