Combatting Spammers and Member Email Addresses Part II

In my ongoing work to remove spammers from the site, I’ve built a few tools to assist in tracking down the miscreants. When they are identified, I ban their accounts. My tools are a work in progress, however, so the possibility exists that I may inadvertently identify a well-behaving member as a spammer. So, if anyone loses access to the site (like two people have to this point), please use the Feedback link at the top of the page to let me know and I will return your account to the proper status.

Speaking of statuses….

1) I’ve added a Lower Primate status to the member list. New members will be assigned to this group. At this point, the Lower Primates will not be able to post to the Forums and will not be able to search the site (including the Forums) using the CMS’s search function.

2) I’ve temporarily removed the Forum search capability from the Primate member group (the group most of the site’s members are assigned) until I develop a workable criteria/system for identifying spammer accounts.

3) I’ve created a Silverback Primate group. Veteran, trusted members of our community will eventually be moved to this group, which will have added features available for site searching and interacting with other members of the site.

4) Members who have not logged in within six months will be moved to Dormant status. Upon return to the site, they will be asked to verify a working email address.

As a reminder: PLEASE VERIFY YOU HAVE A WORKING EMAIL ADDRESS ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR ACCOUNT. I’ll soon be sending out a test email to all site members. All members without a working account will be moved to the Dormant status and will be required to verify a working email address before logging in.

I apologize for any inconvenience you might experience related to these changes. Unfortunately, these steps are required to keep spammers from continually abusing the posting process to insert spam links into the site’s commenting system.
