Off-Topics, Politics, and the Redesign

FYI, in the redesign I will restrict off-topic political discussions to a new politics off-topic blog that I am setting up for the purpose. By default, members will not see these discussions in their Hot Topics until they opt-in to see them. In the interim I will restrict off-topic political discussions to a dedicated monthly thread (similar to the football, basketball, and soccer threads), which will be tagged as “politics”, marked as “OT:Politics” in the title, and which will include a disclaimer about the nature and tone of the discussion. I will also begin closing the off-topic political discussions in other threads.

In the redesign I also will be moving the sports-related off-topic threads to their own dedicated area. Like the off-topic political threads these threads will only appear in Hot Topics when members opt-in to see them. When this change takes place members will be able to submit news links to basketball, football, soccer, and golf (whichever sports that generate interest) articles, which will appear in their appropriate off-topic micro.

So, in the redesign people who wish to discuss these topics will be able to do so easily while people who wish to ignore such topics will be able to do so easily as well.

The others (we'll call them Longthreaders) said "{Forget} that!. I will continue to make a mess in front of your guests. My posting is CRITICAL to the site! I will not be relegated to some backroom!" So the time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is Jim. So, shut it, and take a forum.

Except they weren't really making a mess in front of the guests. Those people got weeded out. That was people like Kevin, Ross, Retardo, and Backlasher.

For the most part the people who make a mess are the hand grenade tossers who come flying into a thread and rile everyone up and then skedaddle. Quite a few of those culprits happen to be loungers I might add.

They could be the most civil things on the planet, following Robert's Rules of Order, and they'd still be clogging up the Hot Topics list on the main site, which detracts from the baseball related content of BASEBALLthinkfactory.org.

So just make the hot topic list longer.

Fifteen is long enough . You are free to make your own 100 topic handwritten Hot Topics, if you like. I will even supply a fresh pencil and a piece of blank paper.

Jim,

#1295 was your clearest explanation yet of the new setup. I don't see any problem with it, but once it's ready to go please give us an explicit "For Dummies" level step-by-step set of instructions on how to set up our preferences.

When I moved the Lounge into the forums, the change was not met with great excitement, to say the least. A few years later, when I asked whether they'd prefer to stay where they are or get moved within the new system, they voted quite overwhelmingly to stay put.

And now those of us who were in the dark about the lounge have seen why.
   1311. Misirlou was a Buddhist prodigy Posted: June 04, 2012 at 03:37 PM (#4147900)
Not at all. All one has to do is click on the poster's handle. For example, click on BVW... and you find he has 674 lifetime comments, and nearly 36,000 forum posts.

That's lazy. At that point you're just one more click away from the lounge.

But then I'd feel all icky and have to take a shower. And it might not be convenient to do so. Better to be safe.

BTW, I love the Longthreaders vs Loungistas rivalry. I'm left wondering is it more reminiscent of the Roundheads vs the Cavaliers, or the Hatfields vs the McCoys?
   1313. villageidiom Posted: June 04, 2012 at 03:39 PM (#4147907)
So all this is about keeping up appearances to impress clickers-through?
Not all this. It appears Jim is trying to solve several fundamental problems with this site in one big bundle of changes. This particular fundamental problem is one we're generally not sensitive to because we're not clickers-through and (I guess) we'd have trouble relating to that at this point in our BTF tenure. I emphasized it in my post earlier because it was one of Jim's points that people kept missing.

So there's going to be an "OT: Pottery"? Where is the pottery discussion going to go?
Knowing this site, it will go to a 900-post thread on whether Patrick Swayze or Demi Moore has the better film catalog.

When you're a Longthreader,
You're a Longthreader evermore
From your first snarky comment
To the time you're put on "ignore".

You're never alone,
You're never disconnected!
You're home with your own:
When the Lounge hurls invective,
You're well protected!

Then you are set
And you'll feel over-friended,
Which you'll never forget
Till your account is suspended.
When you're a Longthreader,
You stay a Longthreader!

(dances effeminately offstage)

I can't be expected to read every page.

Edit: Besides, I prefer to imagine David, and Ray, and McCoy in close cropped hair and stern attire admonishing the (small g) gay loungistas for their frivolent ways and flamboyant dress, and saying "methinks" all the time.

Now if the thread grows to 500 comments in a day and keeps going, I don't think it's unreasonable to move it out of the default Hot Topics while allowing it to appear for people who opt-in to continue seeing such off-topic stuff in their Hot Topics.

For us in the far off time zones, sometimes the thread grows long before we are even up and about. Maybe there could be a widget that displays on-going long threads? Or would that be an automatic part of the new system?

   1329. Ray (RDP) Posted: June 04, 2012 at 04:31 PM (#4147984)
No, Joe. Yes, there is a core of posters who typically contribute. But there are plenty of others checking in and out, and plenty more who enjoy the threads and just lurk.

That said, Jim is changing it, so we'll see how everything plays out once the dust settles.

I think Jolly Old might enjoy it--it's a lot like that classic movie, The Women. Only without the balls of the women in The Women. If John Hughes had written The Women. as if it were a Simpsons episode. Sort of a The Breakfast Club Meets at Camp Krusty.

I did! I was unemployed and he yelled at me about coming up with a game plan towards finding a job and I kinda threw myself into that for the next few months. I hustled resumes and cover letters and went on every interview I was invited to, even if I didn't want the job, just for practice. I ended up with an awesome gig with great people in an industry with a lot of excitement and opportunity. It's no excuse, but the process was draining, and I avoided the lounge (and this site in general) because it was a time suck for me. That was a year and a half ago, and I haven't thanked Harveys. I will next I see him around.
