Off-Topics, Politics, and the Redesign

FYI, in the redesign I will restrict off-topic political discussions to a new politics off-topic blog that I am setting up for the purpose. By default, members will not see these discussions in their Hot Topics until they opt-in to see them. In the interim I will restrict off-topic political discussions to a dedicated monthly thread (similar to the football, basketball, and soccer threads), which will be tagged as “politics”, marked as “OT:Politics” in the title, and which will include a disclaimer about the nature and tone of the discussion. I will also begin closing the off-topic political discussions in other threads.

In the redesign I also will be moving the sports-related off-topic threads to their own dedicated area. Like the off-topic political threads these threads will only appear in Hot Topics when members opt-in to see them. When this change takes place members will be able to submit news links to basketball, football, soccer, and golf (whichever sports that generate interest) articles, which will appear in their appropriate off-topic micro.

So, in the redesign people who wish to discuss these topics will be able to do so easily while people who wish to ignore such topics will be able to do so easily as well.

And I mean, this all utterly misses the point. The entire point of the Lounge, and in fact the Forums in general, is to keep large swaths of non-baseball conversation out of the baseball threads. The effort has had some successes (the "Lounginista") and some failures (the "Longthreaders"). This isn't because the Loungers have kept the Longthreaders out of the Forums, but (at least, from what is being claimed) because the "Longthreaders" dislike the Forum interface.

I just love that we've finally given the tribes names. And I think everyone is missing the larger thing going on here; the Longthreaders are coming together to combat the sneaky, back-talking, whisperer infested Lounginistas! Kneepants and Andy, side by side, arm in arm, fighting off the mean girl hordes from the Lounge! It's like friggin' 9/12 in here, man.

Depends on your stance on the 14th and how it interacts with the 10th's "unenumerated." I mean, it's not specifically *named* in the doc that you would have such a right, right?

But, yes, there are people who don't like the forum interface.

I really don't like the forum interface. And the people who hang out there are huge ##########. Just kidding about that last part. The interface is annoying as hell though, at least IMO. And people who like that interface probably have some sort of deeply engrained character flaw.

The interface is annoying as hell though, at least IMO.

It's easier to deal with if you disable the use of avatars and signature lines. The giant swathes of quoted text can be both an advantage and disadvantage - they're useful in tracking the conversation history, and preventing claims about misquotes, but they can also get overwhelming in length. Some of us are better than others, in terms of attempting to trim them back down to more manageable sizes, when the specific conversation has been going for a while.

It is my hope (and I'm putting a lot of time, effort, and money to the realization of that hope) that the redesign improves every aspect of this site. I learned a long time ago that I can't please everyone completely. Instead I try to manage things well enough that people consider the time they spend on the site worthwhile and want to keep coming back.

The redesign is intended work on a multitude of levels to improve the core strengths of this site: 1) baseball news aggregation and analysis, 2) baseball discussion, and 3) community. No matter which reason you come I hope to make it easier for you to find the stuff you are looking for. This means I also have to make it easier for you to avoid the stuff you aren't interested in.

Well said, Jim. And good luck. I poked some fun at you earlier (somewhere?) for not being the world's greatest communicator - but this was a good message for us.

And Andere in 880, that was epic.

Sugar Bear: best of luck.

I should point out something about us repeating in the Lounge what we say elsewhere. One of the things we do in the Lounge is talk about our lives, the things we are doing, the things we say to other people. And we have the conversation about those things in the Lounge. If there's an argument going on over on the Mainland that someone is involved in, I like to be told in the Lounge when it's worth checking out or when it's worth discussing there.

Everyone is free to continue the conversation with us there, or just to read it. The Lounge has never made any pretense of being closed - it's closed only to the degree to which other people are uninterested in what we have to say (which is a very, very high degree). We do have lots of lurkers; they creep ya out, but it's part of the furniture.

Wonderful thread. I was surprised to learn there are people who ignore long threads. This just amazes me. I love long threads. Perhaps that's because I rarely comment, but really enjoy reading the discussions. Sure, they can become repetitive over the years, or even within a thread, but there are usually good points and funny bits and interesting digressions too.

I've been mostly lurking here for many years, going back to pre-registration days. I doubt I'm one of the typical users Jim is thinking of (btw, Jim, thanks so much for creating & maintaining this gem of a website!), as I rarely click links. Most days, I just go to the Newsstand while I'm eating lunch and start looking for items that seem to be generating comments. Yeah, sometimes the discussion goes off on comic books or burgers, which I have no interest in, but then I just go to a different article. There are usually more than enough to occupy, entertain, and even enlighten me for the hour or so I can spare. I'm not fond of insults and ad hominem attacks, but I've never put anyone on "ignore," never even been seriously tempted; everyone goes off the rails sometimes, but nobody is always off the rails (or at least, even if you've never seen them *on* the rails, doesn't mean they never will be).

Ah well, this is just rambling. I think maybe at some point I will have to investigate the Lounge. It's been a few years since I even looked at it.

I had to get him out of the corner before you started the self-flagellation in protest.

You don't care if I self-flagellate. You're just terrified that I'd post video of me doing it to your Facebook wall.

Also, the fact that Dial is Dialing this thread is awesome.

Well it has been a long thread Al. And for onct Ozzie Guillen is wrong I am not the biggest ass in any bunch. It is official Al. To celebrate I would pour me a Campanis and Soda but there is a ball game on and Ricky Nolaska is not at his Sharptest Al the team may need me. I am looking forward to the new Primer and I have an idea Al. If folks does not like the Beta they does not have to use it. You can call them the Beta Blockers. Better watch the game now Al.

The silliness of "behind someone's back" is that it is all posted on a message board (all of it), so all of it is behind someone's back. You CANNOT know if the person you just said something about will see it.
You cannot "know" if he'll see it, but you know that some people give the Lounge a wide berth, so there's almost no chance they'll see it.

Yes, the awareness that the theoretical likelihood that the person commented on will see the comment is zilch must quite obviously inform the way the poster expresses himself.

Going by my review of comments made on the Lounge about people on the Mainland, I can state unequivocally that those comments are different in tenor and tone as well as substance than they would be had they been aware that the persons talked about visited the Lounge. Some of the remarks were not just insulting; they were insulting in a personal way—a way that would have been expressed differently if the writer thought the person he was writing about was likely to see it. One involved someone who apparently has a physical disability. I do not believe that had they known this person visited the Lounge they would have carried on their conversation about him as they did. They only conversed as they did because they knew they person wasn't likely to witness it.

Jim Thorpe. Best athlete who has ever played. No debate. You can't argue.

For his wonderful posts and his award winning post 959

It seemed a reasonable inquiry.

Worst. Thread. Ever.

So will the redesign feature an actual cross for the mainland posters to hang from while they complain of persecution at the hands of the Lounge, or will it be a virtual cross like the one we have now?

You know for a group of people that supposedly don't take things seriously you guys sure do take this seriously.

This? Have you not even noticed we've spent this entire thread making fun of you, and of all of this? If that is some new sort of taking seriously I am not aware of, I apologize unreservedly, and I will try to get all po-faced and offended about stuff so I can be as light and breezy as I intend.

And what is the point of that? You guys keep coming back to make sure we all know that you don't take it seriously. Alright, we understood that the first time you said it. After 30 or so times of you telling us that it begins to look quite the opposite. We get it, you guys are too cool for school. Congrats.

The Lounge is full of narcissists. I've been saying that for years.
