Off-Topics, Politics, and the Redesign
FYI, in the redesign I will restrict off-topic political discussions to a new politics off-topic blog that I am setting up for the purpose. By default, members will not see these discussions in their Hot Topics until they opt-in to see them. In the interim I will restrict off-topic political discussions to a dedicated monthly thread (similar to the football, basketball, and soccer threads), which will be tagged as “politics”, marked as “OT:Politics” in the title, and which will include a disclaimer about the nature and tone of the discussion. I will also begin closing the off-topic political discussions in other threads.
In the redesign I also will be moving the sports-related off-topic threads to their own dedicated area. Like the off-topic political threads these threads will only appear in Hot Topics when members opt-in to see them. When this change takes place members will be able to submit news links to basketball, football, soccer, and golf (whichever sports that generate interest) articles, which will appear in their appropriate off-topic micro.
So, in the redesign people who wish to discuss these topics will be able to do so easily while people who wish to ignore such topics will be able to do so easily as well.

I just love that we've finally given the tribes names. And I think everyone is missing the larger thing going on here; the Longthreaders are coming together to combat the sneaky, back-talking, whisperer infested Lounginistas! Kneepants and Andy, side by side, arm in arm, fighting off the mean girl hordes from the Lounge! It's like friggin' 9/12 in here, man.
Depends on your stance on the 14th and how it interacts with the 10th's "unenumerated." I mean, it's not specifically *named* in the doc that you would have such a right, right?
But, yes, there are people who don't like the forum interface.
I really don't like the forum interface. And the people who hang out there are huge ##########. Just kidding about that last part. The interface is annoying as hell though, at least IMO. And people who like that interface probably have some sort of deeply engrained character flaw.
Giant rubber band ball for $0.25!
Yes.
+1. Like. WINNING.
It's easier to deal with if you disable the use of avatars and signature lines. The giant swathes of quoted text can be both an advantage and disadvantage - they're useful in tracking the conversation history, and preventing claims about misquotes, but they can also get overwhelming in length. Some of us are better than others, in terms of attempting to trim them back down to more manageable sizes, when the specific conversation has been going for a while.
This is probably the worst thing you've ever said about the Lounge.
Your binding rituals have no power outside of your precious Lounge, priest.
Harv?
The neighborhood where he lived in the Bronx before the Revolution was pretty modest.
I feel dirty saying this - like huffing poo fumes dirty - but Bernal has a point. This thread is awesome.
With Sam as a sort of mutant Clark Gable who's glad to sell switchblades to both sides. I only wish that RETARDO were here to savor all this.
"He arrived in New York City on 13 January 1917 where he stayed for nearly three months at 1522 Vyse Avenue in The Bronx."
So, what neighborhood is that?
My grandfather grew up around there at the time. His father was an immigrant bricklayer, so it wasn't exactly snazzy. Wikipedia gives it a neighborhood name I've never heard. It's either Morrisania or West Farms.
The Longthreaders are all like, "When you're a Jet you're a Jet all the way!" and Bernal's all like "why are they singing?! Make them stop singing!" and CW is all "who the hell snaps their fingers like that these days" and RJ is in the back asking Galean out for beer.
This is better than friggin' Christmas.
Since I'm lazy, can you just save us both some time and tell me if my feelings are hurt? Thanks.
MC's grandfather was a communist.
Also what would be the iconic sneaker? Chucks? Adidas Superstars? Nike Air Max?
Let's just say you should write a bitter post on LiveJournal.
No, they're just adults. That's what adults do. They use terrible interfaces, and of course, they call people who don't choose to use terrible interfaces babies. I don't really understand it very well, but then again, most of my mental energy is engaged in screaming because my pacifier fell onto the floor.
That he was. He met my grandmother at some sort of mixer for left-wing Jewish singles.
O.
M.
G.
This post just won the entire internet forever. I'm in awe.
EDIT: +1. Like.
So coach was like, nah, just distract the guy by dancing around out there and let Barry get his swings.
My Livejournal has more readers than the Lounge. Just sayin'.
And a better interface.
That sounds like a *lot* of work. Not all of us are Charles ####### Babbage, OK?
Must be an uncouth rabble.

2) Click on Edit Preferences
3) Deselect the Display Avatars and Display Signature options.
4) Select Update.
It's basically the same process you'll have to use to opt in to Political threads, so it'll be good practice. Plus, it'll give you a partially streamlined Lounge.
Methinks someone missed a joke.
All of his LJ friends talk about me behind my back.
That's certainly possible. There have been numerous complaints about the clutter in the Lounge/forums, by both regulars and non-regulars, so I chose to take his comment seriously.
Totally. But I followed his steps and it does look much cleaner. Still has the visual appeal of a Walmart.
Thanks.
Your mother has the visual appeal of a Walmart!
Never saw her shop.
Worse by far, George... after all, you're apparently the leader of the Lounge.
Well said, Jim. And good luck. I poked some fun at you earlier (somewhere?) for not being the world's greatest communicator - but this was a good message for us.
And Andere in 880, that was epic.
Sugar Bear: best of luck.
I should point out something about us repeating in the Lounge what we say elsewhere. One of the things we do in the Lounge is talk about our lives, the things we are doing, the things we say to other people. And we have the conversation about those things in the Lounge. If there's an argument going on over on the Mainland that someone is involved in, I like to be told in the Lounge when it's worth checking out or when it's worth discussing there.
Everyone is free to continue the conversation with us there, or just to read it. The Lounge has never made any pretense of being closed - it's closed only to the degree to which other people are uninterested in what we have to say (which is a very, very high degree). We do have lots of lurkers; they creep ya out, but it's part of the furniture.
WITTISo that your mother will use it.CISM
It was perfect. But it should probably get edited.
Wonderful thread. I was surprised to learn there are people who ignore long threads. This just amazes me. I love long threads. Perhaps that's because I rarely comment, but really enjoy reading the discussions. Sure, they can become repetitive over the years, or even within a thread, but there are usually good points and funny bits and interesting digressions too.
You really need to adjust your priorities.
Ah well, this is just rambling. I think maybe at some point I will have to investigate the Lounge. It's been a few years since I even looked at it.
Yes.
Coincidentally, there is a group of loungers that dislike very much so a group of loungers and a group of mainlanders that dislike very much so a group of mainlanders, and NOW we have a group of mainlanders that dislike very much so a group of Loungers.
Oh wait, that's always what it is - SPLSP, OPLOP.
And then there's you, who just hates me.
That's just ####### stupid.
You don't care if I self-flagellate. You're just terrified that I'd post video of me doing it to your Facebook wall.
Going by my review of comments made on the Lounge about people on the Mainland, I can state unequivocally that those comments are different in tenor and tone as well as substance than they would be had they been aware that the persons talked about visited the Lounge. Some of the remarks were not just insulting; they were insulting in a personal way—a way that would have been expressed differently if the writer thought the person he was writing about was likely to see it. One involved someone who apparently has a physical disability. I do not believe that had they known this person visited the Lounge they would have carried on their conversation about him as they did. They only conversed as they did because they knew they person wasn't likely to witness it.
It seemed a reasonable inquiry.
Have you stopped crying now?
And yet Letterman has yet to send you a contract. Go figure.
Personally, I like the candy.
