Trying out a few fixes and comment enhancements

I’ve updated some server configuration settings and fixed some really slow Expression Engine commenting code. I’m seeing significantly lower server loads for this time of the week. From what I’ve noticed and other people have been telling me comment posting is vastly improved (30-45 seconds—> 4-5 seconds). I know this has been a vexing problem for a while but I believe the issue has been fixed.

I’m also testing some comment enhancements in Primer/Newsstand threads. Two of the most frequent requests I get is for the ability to edit posts and the ability to ignore posters. You now have 15 minutes to edit posts. You also can ignore the comments of other members by following the link to their member page within the comments and clicking on the Ignore Member link within their profile. If the changes test out well, I’ll add the changes to the other blogs.

Please let me know of any related issues or problems.

Jim, when I added the ignore feature to the RLYW, I utilized the code that allows you view a single post by an ignored user. That way, if you see a poster getting a lot of "RDF" comments, you can view the post to see what was so funny. Or if they're talking crap about you, you can see what they're saying without having to take them off your ignore list.

Test!

Test edit!

Excellent, thanks Jim.

I have always wanit to be able to fix what I say on primer because you know Al my spelling is not always 110 per cent now when I try to write some name like this kid plays for Cleve. Johnny Piralhta and I see I put the H in after the J in stead of back where it belongs all I have to do is Edit Comment and hey presto.

It seems to me that if Jack Keefe can edit his posts, that "edit" is a bad feature.

It's a trap!

I definitely notice the much faster posting time, which is a big improvement and much appreciated. Although all along I thought it was just my cheesy Earthlink DSL connection.

But I especially like that unannounced feature whereby if anyones presses the "ignore" button after seeing one of my posts, their computer's speakers blare out "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!" That's actually pretty cool.

Don't worry. I think #3 is his edited version.

Editing is great Jim... especially with the 15 minute window. I get frustrated in other places by unlimited editing capabilities... makes for confusing discussion when threads roll on and people start changing what was said previously. The 15 minute window is a good choice.

Oh, and also... good improvements, Jim, esp. on the posting turnaround time. I figured out a while ago that the site would pick up my posts moments after I clicked the button. So I'd just type the post, click to submit, then almost immediately click on a link for a different thread. That seemed to work pretty well (instead of waiting for the posted page to refresh), but was a PITA for things like Game Chatter or any other rapid-posting thread. Thanks for making one more workaround irrelevant!

Thanks, Jim. Good work again.

Hey Jim. I'm using IE 6.0 at work. For some reason I can't see your announcement about site maintenance.

Larry, I thought about setting the ignore feature that way. It kind of defeats the purpose though. People should be ignoring someone because they really don't like the person's posting style and have trouble simply skipping past the things he's says. With the hideaway, it's a little too easy to give into the urge to rubberneck.

Thanks for the improvements Jim. I like that the comments are posted within seconds of me submitting them, rather than the long delay that had become commonplace.

Chatter is back to normal, thanks!!!

Yes, thanks for the post. BTF is MUCH more usable since posting takes less than a geologic era. :-)

Have you taken him off your ignore list?

RDF!

Love the edit feature Jim and with dial up (No high speed available out where we are. My next door neighbour is currently chewing cud and giving me the same baleful expression my wife does when I ask about sex) the extra speed is much appreciated.

MBS Sir James.

Best Regards

John
