When I saw the highlight (is that the proper word?) it never dawned on me that this would wind up so serious. Hope he's OK.

Hang in there Brian. We're with you.

The most dangerous part is over, that being the bleed. Hopefully he will make a full recovery. Just take it easy for now, Brandon. All of baseball fandom is rooting for you.

And I know he has more important worries right now, but he is an impending FA and was probably due to get a pretty good contract this year for the first time in his career. I hope this doesn't jeopardize that.

From what it sounded like on the radio this morning he is expected to make a full recovery but obviously he will be out the rest of the season.

While scrolling down the page, out of the corner of my eye on the Hot Topics sidebar I caught the three words, "Release Brandon McCarthy". I was like, man, maybe he won't be effective after this, but that Billy Beane sure is a dick.

I don't think its guaranteed he ever pitches again, although I sure hope he does.

It really didn't look as bad as some others I've seen, but obviously this one was real trouble.

No, it's not. Here's the A's trainer this evening:

"The biggest issue we deal with after these type of injuries and this type of procedure, is, from what the physicians explained to us, was that Days 2 and 3 are going to be the hardest days. Obviously, we're coming up on Day 3 tomorrow. So the evening time there is a possibility of having a recurring or the increase of swelling coming back again, and if that were the case, they would need to do some different measures and techniques to try to get that swelling, to keep it down."

As far as what can be expected as McCarthy recovers, Paparesta said it is best to take it in steps.

"First and foremost, we need to look at his life and making sure he stays alive. This is serious stuff and we want him to live," Paparesta said. "I think the next phase that we would look at is him being able to go through and have normal gross motor mechanics and skill set, where he can go through his normal active life and live normally. The third thing would be maybe we put a little bit of time to look into his fine motor skills and see where he is at that point in time."
