3. Carlos Gomez, CF, Brewers: Season Stats: .367/.418/.644, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 4 SB
Prior to 2012, Gomez’s career-high in home runs was eight, and his .250/.305/.463 line last year represented career-highs in all three categories, so he is set up for a larger fall than most here. Still, one has to recognize how valuable he has been so far this season. After all, the reason Gomez didn’t wash out of the majors ...

There were only five left fielders in the NL who played in even 100 complete games last season, so the pickin's were slim. If 100 is the floor for consideration, the only people Braun had to beat out were Matt Holliday and Jason Kubel.

(2) Why do they insist on giving Jimmy Rollins these awards? I've never noticed that he was a particularly good fielder.
Or has it already been decided? And the finalist tag some kind of mean trick? An excuse for a TV announcement show?
For what? To spur chatter about whom among the three or four may win?
And inane questions about the process?
not trying to engage in hyperbole but he played at a level close to cirillo in the late 90's
Is it wrong for me to think that 3B is a position where a player can quickly improve his value? Because the ball gets on a 3B so quickly, often before he can take more than a step or two, it seems like it's the one position where positioning can most easily make up for athletic ability.
Yeah, I have to remind myself of the "real" internet every time I get annoyed by someone here. Talk about picking nits - this place is Dickens compared to sites like the one linked above....
all i know is that he handled everything his way with aplomb. charged effectively on bunts. went to his left smoothly
made some legit really good plays throughout the year
He can put it on his mantle next to his Aaron Award.

The AL WAR Gold Glove team saved 57 more runs than the actual Gold Glove winners, the majority of that in the 37-run margin Trout had over Jones in CF.

The NL WAR Gold Glove team saved 108 more runs than the actual Gold Glove winners. Every position except 1B was a bad miss; all between 19-32 run differences for the winner and WAR leader.
i hear tell that brendan ryan is an even better SS for the mariners than he was for saint looey and he was almost adam everett quality when he was there. and having wqatched jj hardy i can say that on no planet does jj hardy even think of being anywheres NEAR the ss that brendan ryan is
mccutchen has a higher BA than bourn - but firtunately, he really IS a really good CF. not bourn, but he really IS good. jimmy rollins????? REALLY??????
Great range, great instincts, great arm.
Missed it by THAT much.
Compare to 1992:
Pagnozzi - Grace - Lind - Pendleton - Ozzie - Bonds - Van Slyke - Walker
Pudge - Mattingly - Alomar - Ripken - Ventura - Griffey - Puckett - Devon
Is this an artifact of my being a stupid credulous little kid back then, or are those names a lot more impressive?
The team lacks an identified fifth starter, first baseman, shortstop, left fielder, right fielder and DH.
Josh "Spider-Man" Reddick was an excellent choice.
Great range, great instincts, great arm.
Good job Red Sox! Happy to see Reddick succeed somewhere.
Agree with above sentiments, not sure how Trout missed out here. He's not getting the MVP, so it'll be AL rookie only.
I think it is a lot more about quick reactions and a strong, accurate arm. Charging bunts and slow rollers is another thing.
I am surprised he's one of the top 3 in the AL, ergo, a finalist.
Trout obviously should have beaten Jones, but I don't buy that he was 37 runs better. IIRC, there's a weird home/road split with the defensive numbers for Orioles outfielders. I think Jones is average to slightly below average overall.
Barney had an amazing year. The Cubs put a new emphasis on positioning this year. Perhaps it was the influence of Dave McKay or perhaps it was organizational, but Barney almost always seemed to be in the right spot to make a play. Combine that with range not seen in Chicago since Sandberg, sure hands that result in a .997 fielding percentage, and the arm of one who came up as a shortstop. One of the few bright spots in a dismal year for the northsiders. It's nice to see him recognized.
Now I understand how the Braves could have a great defense despite having a bad defensive 1B, 3B, C (unless you buy into the framing pitches thing), and an historically bad 2B.
