    ESPN: Simon: Andrelton Simmons makes all the plays

    Entering Wednesday, Simmons had played 680 innings in his major league career and the Baseball Info Solutions (BIS) numbers have him with 30 defensive runs saved. He had 19 in 426 innings last season and already has a major-league best 11 in 254 innings in 2013.

    For a little perspective, that’s an incredible number for what amounts to less than half a season’s worth of play. No shortstop has had 30 defensive runs saved in a full season since Troy Tulowitzki had 31 in 2007.

    You are clearly not a Braves fan, because otherwise "news" that Chipper Jones is a hunter would be like "news" that Chipper Jones was a third baseman.

    Even if you didn't already know Larry was a hunter it woudln't be surprising to find out, but I was surprised a few years back when I read about Karl Malone's hunting prowess. He could probably kill a bull elk with his bare hands.

    Malone and Barkley form a mutual admiration society, and Malone told me that from time to time he asks Charles to accompany him on hunting trips. Malone describes their conversations thusly:

    “What are we going after?” Charles will ask.

    “Mountain lion and bear,” Karl will answer.

    “Can’t we hunt something that won’t fuckin’ kill us?” says Barkley.

    They’ve never gone and probably never will.

    Like almost any other large group, there's plenty of cultural diversity among African Americans. In rural Louisiana, where Karl Malone is from, there are many who ride horses, raise cattle, and hunt and fish. They have things in common with Alan Simpson as much as Allen Iverson.

    Also, I wonder if Chipper is a switch-archer.

    Then there are people like Zlatan Ibrahimovic (the Swedish soccer star) who grew up in a squalid project, but now spends much of his free time flying around the globe and killing various beasts.

    Yeah, I lived in Utah when Malone played, and he was well known as a total redneck who spent every available moment 4-wheeling, hunting, fishing, etc. It's one reason he was so popular there.

    Yep. He had a big rig that you'd sometimes see parked at truck stops in SLC with a western mural painted on the side, complete with a depiction of himself dressed as a cowboy on a horse. It was awesome, in that unintentionally hilarious sort of way (like the A-Rod centaur thing).
