Segura NL Player of the Week

The Brewers have lost nine of their last 10, but shortstop Jean Segura’s outstanding play during the past week earned him National League Player of the Week honors for the period ending May 12.

In five games last week, Segura hit an NL-best .500 over 20 at-bats while leading the league in slugging percentage (.950) and on-base percentage (.545).

translation: the brewers pitching stinks but they have some guys in the field who can play.

Good for the Brewers and Good for Ron Roenicke. I didn't have much of a rooting interest in this series, but it's nice to see a former Angels coach moving on. Mostly, I just really want to see someone beat Texas.

This is so overrated and or weak analysis. 1 market is only worth about 5%, at most, of the ratings. What get's people to watch are compelling teams/stories, competitive games. Sure the household Yankees/Sox are out, but the remaining four teams can still create a huge rating. Braves v Twins was a monster World Series.

Strange how seemingly inconsequential transactions loom large come playoff time. If you had told me seven months ago that Nyjer Morgan would be sending the Brewers to the NLCS because of his role in an NLDS elimination game, I would have wondered which Brewer hit the winning homer that bounced off of Morgan's glove.

Uecker did the 10th. Normally he would go refill his cocktail or take a dump, but for an elimination game, WTMJ wisely kept Uecker on the play by play.

RE ratings. Don't fall into the NFL trap about ratings. MLB gets eyeballs on TV sets Monday - Sunday. The NFL does well on one, maybe two days tops. Also, MLB sells more tickets than the NBA, NFL and NHL combined. And....MLB has TWO teams in LA, count 'em, TWO!!!

Unless they then put games on Thursday and Saturday at which point they get eyeballs on games 4 days tops.

I'm betting that there are some ESPN football programs that air during the week that get better ratings than baseball games.

Braves v Twins was a monster World Series.

Mostly because it went to 7 games. If it went 5 games or so it wouldn't have been.

That series' ratings were right inl ine with the ratings for the WS ratings around it with the only difference being that it went 7 whereas the other games went 4 games or 6.

As for stories:

The Phillies-Rays series was a dud despite having a ton of story lines that should have made it interesting and yet the next year which featured the Yankees and Phillies got the highest ratings since about 1996. Giants-Rangers again had a ton of interesting story lines and again it was a dud of a world series ratings wise.

They're not; the division titles are. That is why the Brewers now need to beat the Cardinals four more times after already beating them over 162 games.

Personally, I think Morgan makes the team more fun to watch. The guy is 100% emotion. Had him on my DMB team for the last three or four years.

You're a closer in a really high-pressure environment, and the opponent has just tied the game on a bloop and a bunt (and, to be fair, a hard hit double preceding that). Now it's first and second, nobody out, tie game. To gather it up and strike out the next guy, then get out of the inning, was huge and really impressive.

Right now we're on pace to rival the 2003 playoffs. On pace is deceptive though. To keep the pace we need a couple of 7 game CSes with at least two "documentary worthy" moments....tough standard. Also, one of the series has to go seven games and end on a walkoff homer.

One thing I noticed is that Gomez is taking great swings at the plate the last several weeks. If Ron started Carlos over Nyjer against a right-handed pitcher I wouldn't howl too much right now. Won't happen but THAT is how impressed I have been with the approach/swings Carlos has been taking. It's like he is a different hitter up there.
