He costs nothing to acquire
to the Yankees for the proverbial PTBNL or cash considerations.
Why do they have to work out anything? Stewart's awful and he's a malcontent. If you don't want him around, just release him. Yeah, he's got a million dollars left on the contract, but it's a million bucks and you're a big league team. You're paying him that money anyway, and it's not like you're eating some grand investment.
Is this a reluctance to appear to be giving in to Stewart's whining?

Now begins the Brian Bugosevic era (he's apparently being recalled to take Marmol's spot).
It really is a shame that Jim Hendry had delusions that the 2010 team was a piece or two away from being legitimate contenders, because I'll bet he could have gotten a fairly nice haul for Marmol following his record-setting 2010 campaign. I wasn't upset with the contract Marmol got after that, but given how 2011 went for the Cubs (and Marmol), that seemed like a "sell high" moment if there ever was one. Of course, Hendry never really seemed to accept the Cubs as anything worse than a team that was just a piece or two away.
How's that proverb go?
Better a bird in the hand than ten to be named later.
So Marmol's contract and performance probably make him a tough move, but surely some team takes a chance on him, right?
Someone can correct me - but it's only the first 3 days of a DFA when waivers (and picking up the full contract) apply.
And now, according to ESPN, Stewart has been granted his unconditional release.
Waivers take 3 days, but it doesn't have to be the first three. You can put a DFA'd player on waivers after 7 days.
I think at minimum in a bad situation, I would always say "Only on the condition that you go #### yourself".
