It chaps my ass to have to say this, but...Plaschke's right on this point at least. Dumb, near inexplicable move by Mattingly. Have the PREVIOUS pitcher issue the IBB if you must, and what are you doing IBB'ing Reed Johnson in the first place?
The previous pitcher issuing the IBB didn't make any sense in this context, because a RHP was in and we pinch-hit for the pitcher with Constanza, a lefty, and then Mattingly replaced the RHP with Gonzalez, at which point Reed Johnson came in. So Mattingly didn't know he would want an IBB until Fredi Gonzalez replaced Constanza with Reed Johnson.
We discussed this in the game chatter. Just have Withrow pitch to Constanza. Withrow's really good, and Constanza's laughably bad. You don't need to go through any machinations when Jose Constanza is at the plate.
And Weekly Journalist has got a point as well: it's typically Plaschke-ian silliness to start in with "ohhh he's on thin ice now!" after Mattingly helmed the Dodgers to a fantastic season involving a massive turnaround.
Well, except for the fact that SoCal sports radio stations have been talking up the "Mattingly has to get past the 1st round or he's gone because management doesn't like his in-game tactical decisions" buzz for several weeks now.
yes, I have been underwhelmed by Ron Darling on the telecasts (Cal Ripken too, but that was expected)
With Heyward the big threat is that he could go deep which probably makes Withrow/Constanza the best matchup in a general situation, but in this situation a single kills you almost as much as a homer. And I think Constanza is more likely to get a hit of any kind against a righty than Heyward is against a lefty. That said, having the bases loaded changes the dynamic of an at bat quite a bit so it's really hard to say what the right move is.
