It is lucky in chinese culture. Vietnamese are into numerology also and carry a lot of chinese cultural heritage, but I am not sure about the exact signifigance of 88 for vietnamese.
I'm pretty sure it comes from Chinese. Chinese, at various points in their history, were military adventurists and went through SE Asia. The Petronas Towers in Malaysia, for example, have 88 floors.
8 sounds similar to wealth in Chinese so it's very lucky. 4 sounds like death, so it's very unlucky. Go to Macau if you want to see these superstitions on display. It's pretty amazing.
