Pittsburgh Gazette Times, May 24, 1913:

Excessive use of the spitball has injured Ed Walsh’s digestion and has thus affected his condition, so that he has not yet reached his best form of this year, according to Dr. James H. Blair, club physician of the Chicago Americans, in a report made today on the pitcher’s condition.

So what happens if you are eligible for free agency, but do not file for free agency? Do you return to your last team? For what salary? I was thinking about Randy Wolf who is eligible for free agency, but is out for all of next year with TJ surgery. Could he opt to just return with the O's to rehab and get them to pay for his surgery and rehab? If not, does he pay for all of that out-of-pocket (or through some sort of MLBPA health plan?) Or workers comp?

It's automatic now (I think they changed it about two years ago).

I've been doing some hunting but I can't find any info. Does anyone know if Clubhouse Confidential (Brian Kenny's stat based show) is coming back to the MLB Network this winter?

Also, if you already need a baseball fix MLBN has the Arizona League Rising Stars game tomorrow at 8PM (Eastern time). (rosters here)

Greg A. Harris was able to throw with both hands, although I believe he only did it once at the major league level. He had a special glove that could be worn on either hand.

There was story that during a Pirates/Phillies game, Harris came into pitch with Van Slyke on at first. Randy Ready was playing first for the Phils, and it prompted this exchange:

Van Slyke - What's up with his glove?

Ready - He's amphibious.

Van Slyke - What does that mean, he can pitch underwater?

BAL claims A.Casilla from MIN. CHN claims Z.Putnam from COL. CLE claims B.Wood from KCR. KCR claims G.Moscoso from COL. KCR claims B.Hayes from MIA. MIN claims J.Roenicke and T.Field from COL. MIL claims A.Leon from HOU. KC DFA's J.Jeffress, T.Hottovy, and J.Bourgeois.

N.Morgan and K.Loe refuse outright assignments, are now FAs.

Its a minor move, but its pretty stupid of Dayton Moore to lose a useful reliever like Blake Wood to get a third string catcher like Brett Hayes. Especially since they already had a third string catcher on the 40 man roster in Adam Moore.

I liked Hottovy, and he's a local kid, so I hope he clears waivers somehow. There is certainly dreck on the 40 man roster worth jettisoning before him.

AG#1, man I think you hit it on the head as far as Brett Hayes, Wood and Hottovy.
Moscoso in and Jeffres out seems like another case of the Royals not understanding the power of K's for pitchers. In fact they seem to be directly opposite of most teams in how they think about the role of K's and BB with regard to both pitchers and batters.

That's weird the Rockies waived Moscoso and Roenicke. I don't keep good track of their minor league system, but I wonder if they have a lot of minor leaguers who need to be put on the 40 man.
