Probably the oddest baseball ground rule ever made was recently agreed upon by the managers of two Cleveland City League teams.
A dog insisted on running on the field and carrying to his master every ball the fielders failed to catch. One manager declared his team would not play unless the clubs were protected by a ground rule which gave a player a base if he started for it before the dog fielded the ball. If the dog got the ball with men on base they were not to move until the sphere had been rescued.
Do they mean to call the umpire "doughy"? I think maybe "doughty".

“No more surprised than I was yesterday to see the Nationals trying to win without a pitcher,” replied the doughy Timothy.
