“Tom Cheek was the voice of summer for generations of baseball fans in Canada and beyond,” said Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson. “He helped a nation understand the elements of the game and swoon for the summer excitement that the expansion franchise brought a hockey-crazed nation starting in the late 1970s. He then authored the vocal narrative of a team that evolved into one of the most consistent clubs of the 1980s and 1990s. We are thrilled to celebrate Tom’s legacy with baseball broadcasting’s highest honor.”

Here is the complete bottom of the 9th inning of game 6 of the 1993 World Series, as called by Cheek. I've heard Cheek's call of Carter's home run countless times over the last 19 years, but I hadn't heard his call of the full half-inning until today.

It's great to see Cheek finally win the award. He deserved it.

Glad he has been honoured this way. I was 7 when the Jays started playing, and he will always be the voice of baseball to me

I am happy for the Jays fans, as he was certainly deserving of this award. I hope that one day Bill King is remembered with this award as well.

Cheek has earned it - he was the Jays voice and he didn't miss a game until his father died, then almost immediately he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Sad, but I'm glad the Jays honoured him while he was alive and that he now gets this recognition.

A few recent choices made me go 'wha?' as I feel there should be a rule like they use for managers, 65 or older with rare exceptions and ideally retired. For example, Jon Miller just made no sense, far too soon. Now I'm sure Canadians will be pressing for Jacques Doucet - the French voice of the Expos from 72 to 2004, and now the French voice of the Blue Jays. Get him in and we've covered the core of baseball voices in Canada (Van Horne for English Expos, Tom Cheek for Jays, and Doucet who crosses over both).

My wishes for the future: 1) Bill King, 2) Skip Caray, 3) Vince Lloyd. King is too often overlooked because he was a renaissance man, doing the Raiders, Warriors and A's with equal aplomb. I was fortunate to hear him with Lon Simmons on one occasion, and it was magic, as good as Harry Caray and Jack Buck in their Cardinal days.

Congrats to Cheek. I too think that Bill King is long overdue.
