1. Whoever did this, as a minumum, used really poor judgement, and possibly is a real (insert bad word here).
2. A million times a day in America people use really poor judgment or show they are (ditto bad word).
"under investigation"? We complain about Big Brother and movie rating system and things you used-to-not-be-able-to-say on TV, and the sports world continues to move toward wadding up much of the first amendment. We took out Marge Schott an dfew people blinked since everyone hated her anyway. But the ball began rolling downhill, and I don't see any big movement to stop it. I guess no one chants "sticks and stones..." anymore.

The First Amendment does not protect you from censorship from your employer.
No, but sometimes it's a nice ideal to live up to, right?
Sometimes. And sometimes speech having consequences is an ideal worth living up to as well.

I think that people not using bigoted speech is also a nice ideal to live up to. So in this situation, I don't really have a problem with MLB policing speech.

I think it's a good policy, but the "investigation" part makes the whole thing seem like a farce. The tweet is down now, just fine Holland and be done with it. If he wants to find the real Tweeter, than he can investigate that on his own.

I love this site because that "free speech" horse poop does not fly. Unless, of course, you want to limit the free speech of organisations and corporations (oh snap)
I don't have a big problem with it either, but this isn't an official MLB account or anything, nor is it a part of his job in any way. It's just a player acting in public while off the job. So I can see the argument either way.

I also love the idea that no one blinked at Schott because "we hated her anyway", rather than the fact that she was an effing Nazi, like an actual effing Nazi.

Leaving aside the first amendment idiocy, who complains about the movie rating system?

Anybody who says this is a First Amendment issue should be sent to jail.
An investigation without a warrant is a fourth amendment issue. And they're using his own tweet! That's fifth amendment. Anyone know if the Marines are sleeping in his house?
The easy way to deal with it is to tell him that he is responsible for his twitter account, now apologize (add disclaimers if you must about someone else posting for you), make a big donation to an appropriate group, march in a parade if he really wants to look like it wasn't him and move on. Trying to 'clean' his reputation is just going to draw 10 times the attention and make him look either more guilty or open up a different can of worms at some point that he didn't want opened.

If the Tweeter wasn't drunk, he was violating the Twenty-First Amendment's requirement to drink. Of course, why would anyone Tweet sober?
I've recently started following some people on Twitter. It seems to be pretty useful to stay up to the minute on news and find out about articles that I might have some interest in. What I can't grasp is why anyone is interested in the random musings of other people though. "Hey, I'm at Starbucks, love me a cup o' Joe!" type stuff seems silly.
Maybe I'm mis-reading the situation, but if Holland believes that someone hacked into his account and tweeted a comment that wasn't his, that seems worthy of an investigation. That would be fraudulent, right?
I wish Keefe still posted on his blog. Where is the old sot, anyway?

That's the issue Anthony Weiner raised.
The only problem was that it was Weiner who had done the hacking.
A. Chapman is "fatigued" after throwing 67.2 innings. I am hiring a Rubenesque Italian lass to sing a dirge, as manliness has died this day.
That's my favourite from Old Hoss Radbourn's tweets.

From Holland’s account - (at)Dutch-Oven45 - a tweet using a homophobic slur was sent in response to someone calling Holland a “pathetic excuse” for a pitcher…
It's all a misunderstanding about Dutch levees.

If MLB had a policy to consistently *investigate* every offensive post all of their players and owners and coaches made, because it is their policy that these guys have a duty not to be jerks, that would be one thing. I doubt it would work, because soon players would be afraid to make jokes about anything in the locker room with a reporter nearby. But it is apparent to many that they get up in arms more over some things than others. I don't know, maybe the answer is that the jerks aim more often at some groups. But I prefer a world where the people around the jerks police their own and over time by good example the jerks realize they ought to change; instead of suspending players or owners for being jerks. Go ahead, roll your eyes, call me an idealist.

Never. It's much more realistic that someone hacked his twitter account so that he could send out one tweet in support of Holland.

Does not compute.
EDIT: Cokes.
Who doesn't complain about the movie rating system?
THAT is some wondrously good stuff.
I can't imagine why someone might think that a guy with such a classy Twitter name might use a slur of some sort...
