I'm ok with the rich folk who own the Giants making that gamble for me
Yes. I am always surprised by the number of fans that treat money paid to sports stars as if it were their money they are spending.
Well, they've got the money
They need a starter after Bumgarner and Cain. Who else should they get?
I think it's less about who else they should get, and more about how much they committed to him. His peripherals show some evidence of a rebound, but his stuff is still not where it was a few years ago.
Would you rather have Timmeh for this cash or Fat Bart?
How is any decision not about whether the choice made is better or worse than the alternatives?
I think the years are the key. It seems to me, if he was still Timmeh! he'd get a contract worth this much per year but for 6 or 7 years.
Except for a few super-rich / crazy spending teams*, any money spent on a player who won't return value is money you can't spend on a player who will. It makes perfect sense given that the fan's interest is in seeing his/her team succeed.
Probably an overpay in annual pay.
The Giants have quite a few holes. If they could get 90% of the value of Lincecum at 50% of what they just paid for him, they could have shored up another area of weakness. But who knows...
seasonal xFIP going backwards: 3.56, 3.82, 3.36, 3.09, 2.83, 3.13, 3.81
seasonal HR/FB going backwards: 12.1%, 14.6, 8.0, 9.9, 5.5, 5.6, 8.2
BABIP was in line with career numbers.
