I'm taking the family to Montreal in a few weeks for a long weekend. A wonderful city, love the international flavor, and enjoyed going to see the Expos back in the day...but Stade Olympique was a lousy place to watch a game. In the 25 or so years between 1969 and the mid-1990s, the Expos had a rich history, hall-of-fame caliber players - but I think the stadium was a killer.

Has there been any kind of movement to land an AAA team? My guess is they would have to build a stadium, which may be unpalatable, but there is a rich minor league tradition in Montreal as well - its a shame there is no affiliated pro ball there right now.

I haven't gotten to Montreal since 1997. That was the year Pedro Martinez started the year 8-0 in his first eight starts. Lucky me, I got to attend his ninth. We were also fortunate enough to visit the same week that a swarm of flying insects appeared, which we were told is an annual occurrence. They made our hotel balcony look like Joba Chamberlain's head. Fun trip, though.

Expos fans certainly didn't lack for passion. I remember watching this game and being struck after Cliff Floyd's home run by how extraordinarily loud that stadium could get when there was just cause for it. That was the '02 season when the Expos hung around for a few months and Minaya made the infamous Colon trade.

Back in the days of the old Fanhome boards, the Expos forum was one of the liveliest on the site. It wasn't always a pleasant message board; the fans had been understandably embittered by the Loria years, and they tended to work out their anger on any non-Expos fan who wondered in. They didn't like statheads. And I was genuinely appalled by the way the board universally applauded Tomo Ohka for deliberately hitting Andruw Jones in the head in this game. Jones' crime was hitting two home runs. But if you were looking for passionate discussion of baseball, the Expos board was a must-read.

Montreal won't cotton to a minor-league team, for the same reason Orlando won't: they consider themselves a major-league city now, thank you very much. A similar situation occured when Quebec City tried to bring in a minor-league hockey team after the Nordiques left; they died quickly, despite a cool logo.

I think MLB in Montreal is po$$ible, if the $tar$ align properly...
