Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza and Craig Biggio have been elected to the Hall of Merit!
The timing for our first year electing 4 candidates could not have worked out better, since class of 2013 is the strongest in terms of electees that we’ve ever had. The top of the 1934 ballot included Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Eddie Collins, Pop Lloyd, Smokey Joe Williams and Cristobal Torriente, but only 2 were elected.
Bonds and Clemens were each unanimous at 1 and 2. I believe that’s the first ...

1. Neutral Milk Dotel (Dan Lee) posted on August 23, 2011 at 09:06 AM # hit 0 | hit 0Fernando Valenzuela pinch hits for Tim Crews (P) batting 9th
Rich Thompson whiffed Fernando. It was one of 19 career pinch-hitting appearances for the large lefty, who hit .389 as a PH.
he just wanted to play with 5 of the dogs
But Raines was hitting 4th? Really? Somehow, I did not remember Larry Walker being an Expo so early. And John Wetteland winning the game for the Dodgers is rather interesting.
Then comes a litany of other events having their anniversary today, including: back-to-back pinch hit homers, Bonds joins the 400/400 club, a minor league double-no-hitter, 1-0 (22), Gaylord Perry finally busted, Finley sells out, Dick Allen hits one to Harry Caray in center, Lindy McDaniel w/ one of the best relief performances ever, Bob Feller's 1st win, Julio Franco born, Lefty Grove's big clubhouse blowup, the hitless wonders can't lose.
Technically, he didn't end it then. Dempsey still had to go back out and catch.
But he did end it in the bottom half of the inning, throwing out Rex Hudler trying to steal second for the final out of the game.

Lasorda is the only manager I remember having problems with the Phanatic. An occasional surly ump did, but Lasorda's about the only manager. Lasorda claimed it was about the Phanatic taking a big tamper thingy and demolishing the opposing team's batting helmet. My theory is that he didn't like the Phanatic's imitation of Dt10D Tommy, with his big belly bouncing all around.
He didn't end the game, but he did end the shutout.
You'll want to correct the 22-inning game note. It wasn't a walk-off home run.
Angel Pagan wasn't done yet.
I felt it pretty well in Southern Maryland.
Hey, there it is again!
Wandy Rodriguez has just been claimed by a mystery team.
I'm not saying. I'm just saying.
Wrong Hole Buster says it's the Nats.
If I ever have a stroke, I hope it gives me superpowers.
WTF????
Then my girlfriend texted me that an earthquake had happened and everything fell into place.
Isn't Aaron Hill really terrible now? Why would the DBacks want those two?
Isn't KJ a free agent in a few months? Why even bother if you're the Jays? Just to save some money?
Hill + McDonald - owed $6.5 million in 2011. Hill has a number of club options that will be turned down, not sure if he has a buyout. McDonald is a FA.
KJ - owed $5.85 million in 2011, FA at the end of the year.
They very well might have improved their team marginally. If they're going to bother to upgrade, though, I would think they'd dream a little bigger.
Good point. That's gotta be it. According to MLBTR's reverse engineering, Johnson is a Type B free agent, and could play his way into Type A compensation if he plays well.
They need a 2b for next year. You look around and see that the best 2b available via either trade or FA, is Kelly Johnson.
Problem is, Johnson will cost you a draft pick.
So what do you do? Trade two of your own FAs who you weren’t going to offer arbitration to so you can get Johnson, then resign him without giving up the draft pick.
For Arizona they get…. the hope that Hill bounces back to 2009. I can’t imagine them picking up his option though.
1B: Overbay
2B: Hill
3B: Roberts
SS: McDonald
All three played those positions for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2007 (sadly, never at the same time).
