Still, French pronunciation bo-nee-VAIR, meaning “good winter" makes me not like the band already.

Shouldn't it be Bon Hiver? It's been years since I studied French, but I've never seen the French word for winter written as "iver". It's possible that the band didn't want people calling them "Bawn HIGH-ver", but it seems odd to insist on a French pronunciation based on an incorrect spelling.

Bon Iver is a very good outfit, though it's really a vehicle for Justin Vernon more than a solidified band. For someone interested in checking out their music, I'd recommend the songs 'Creature Fear,' and 'Blood Bank.' If you dig those, check out the two albums. The albums have some really lovely transitions connecting songs, real cohesive.

Bon Iver (French pronunciation bo-nee-VAIR, meaning “good winter”)

Winter is spelled "hiver" in French, not iver.

Until recently I was a college prof. in the south, and all of my intelligent-sensitive-faux-hipster students LOVED Bon Iver. All over him. Or them. Or it. I have no idea. Just that it was THE NAME that everyone in this sort of sensitive-indie-lyrical-folk-rock crowd was listening to.

To me, it sounded like any of 1000 other groups that basically involve an emotionally fragile bearded man softly crying as he played his acoustic guitar.

Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) might be a bit pretentious but he recorded a live album with his old high school's band. That's pretty cool. Also, Blood Bank and For Emma, Forever Ago are good albums.

Kind of. I listened to it a couple times when it came out but haven't played it since then. I thought it was a bit overproduced and lost the sort of DIY charm of the first 2. But a lot of people apparently liked it and I don't want to disparage it too much.

It's a different animal, for certain. I had to sort of "force myself" to like it -- and by that I mean listen to it repeatedly even though it didn't grab me on the first couple listens (unlike For Emma...). It worked. I love it.

I tried. I can't do it. I hate Bon Iver with the fire of 1,000 suns. Bon Iver is now firmly ensconced in the category of music I like to think of as for people who don't really like music. It seems to be a very popular category nowadays.

Trivia: Justin Vernon is the son of Gil Vernon, one of three arbitrators fired by the owners after awarding Derek Jeter $5 million in his first arbitration case. The Yanks offered $3.2 million. He was rehired in 2004 and still works cases today.

Well, if you said the Mets are now firmly ensconced in the category of baseball I like to think of as for people who don't really like themselves, I would have to agree. I was trying to be provocative and it was a bit of a joke, so I'm sorry if I offended. I just find Bon Iver boring and somewhat vacant. I like a little more life to my music. As you note, just a matter of taste.

For all you dinos baffled by why kids my age like Bon Iver particularly over some other band of similar sound and skill, I'd point to Kanye West. Before "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" I doubt half of Bon Iver's fanbase even knew who they were.

I have friends who only know Cam'Ron from Kanye records, which is ####### shameful.
