I can't really comment relative to other years (other than to say that I recall there being some underwhelming names at times) but ...
Cano has never hit 30 in a year
Beltran has been tearing it up but averaged about 22 HR per 600 PA since 2007.
Gonzalez has topped 30 HR only once and 64 of his career 94 HR have come at home. (that includes his short time in Oak)
Of course one of those three will now win it.*
* I'm not gonna go poking for who should take their place and I assume they do (or try to) limit it to guys going to the game anyway.
Well, Cano did win the HRD last year and already has 20 HR this year...

I think that Trumbo is a bit of an odd choice. The man has power, no doubt, but you'd think maybe go with a more established HR guy like Adam Dunn or Josh Hamilton. I guess they want to hype the young guy, and obviously he doesn't not deserve it. Fielder only has 12 HR this year, so a bit of an odd choice too, to be honest.
well, i think we all know why braun isn't there but i don't know how you keep a straight face and don't have one of the league's best power hitters and the season league leader on the home run hitter squad

I'm happy to see Bautista there, but I'd be fine if he gave up his space to Dunn.
Bautista didn't do so well last year, and I'd love to see Dunn launch some bombs.
Also, after his performance at Yankee Stadium, I would think that picking Hamilton should be a no-brainer every year after that.
I'm thinking it's Stanton vs Fielder in the final, with Stanton winning.
Sadly, I'm going to miss everything to do with the All-Star game (and baseball in general) for the next couple of weeks while I'm in Europe.

I thought that Jose's troubles last year had a lot to do with the guy tossing to him, who was utter crap. Couldn't get one over the middle of the plate the entire time. I hope he's been training, or Jose has picked someone else.

I suggest Luke Hochevar.

I agree with everyone above about Adam Dunn. He has hit several monster shots in his career. He would appear to be a perfect choice for this kind of thing.

Yes, what a horrible thing. To have to holiday in Europe for two weeks, my heart bleeds for you. I believe they have the internet in Europe, you might catch some highlights.

But only after taking 50 walks and 100 called strikes.

You might want to develop an escape plan if the economic situation turns (more) ugly while you're there. Jus sayin.

You can debate the accuracy of the home run distance measurements, but there was a stat shown in an Angels game last week that had Trumbo with the longest average home runs in the majors, and he's hit 19 I think. Sometimes the Vets don't like to participate, so all things considered, that probably makes him a good choice. This is from a week or two ago:
But the really fun thing to watch is Trumbo taking batting practice. At Dodger Stadium last week, he hit a soaring shot down the left-field line that, according to Angels pitchers who watched it fly over their heads, bounced off a sun shade and went careening out of the stadium.
“I don’t know how far it was, but it was a mammo shot,” reliever Jordan Walden said. “When Mark gets a hold of one, it goes a long way. A long way.”
You might want to develop an escape plan if the economic situation turns (more) ugly while you're there. Jus sayin.
Escape? And miss a once in a lifetime opportunity to lord it over the natives with the almighty dollar? Just don't offer to buy the Eiffel Tower, the French are a proud people.

Hamilton said he would not be participating in the HR Derby about a month ago.

Dunn did as well. Don't get on Cano for not picking guys who said they don't want to do it.
Now, if you want to get on him for not giving slots to Butler and Granderson when he said weeks ago that he would ask them both, be my guest. In fact, Kansas City should boo him loudly.

It is insane for Kemp to participate in this thing. The Dodgers should put a stop to this crap right now.

Anyway, doesn't matter at all.
I thought Dunn would have been a fun choice too. Maybe Dunn, Bautista, Butler for the AL, Stanton, Votto, CarGo for an NL team.
