Ichiro is a "stats" candidate for those who (a) include his Japanese League stats; (b) look only at stats like hits, BA and gold gloves or (c) give credence to the WAR numbers for defense and baserunning. He is a "narrative" candidate as well, which includes everything from his "pioneer" status to the "excitement" he generated.
I hope he's got one more Ichiro season in him.
Not that we need to have this debate again, but once you give Ichiro NPB credit, he's a no-brainer Hall of Famer. (b), (c), and "narrative" are unnecessary.
However, for Ichiro, it's sufficient for his NPB service to be an acceptable reason for not penalizing him for a "short" MLB career.
There is no "penalty for a short career."
Maybe, I'm misremembering, but I believe the anti-Ichiro HoF caucus is not much more than a single Primate.
