Chace’s Pancake Corral, for real. (NYT backgrounder on the star who stayed)
Read More...Seems our favorite M, who dazzles us with the K, makes it a point to visit the Pancake Corral a couple of times a week, in fact, whenever the team’s in town.
“Yes, he comes in with wife and cute little boy and he always has the strawberry waffle with bacon and eggs and orange juice,” says owner Jane Zakskorn, whose dad, William Chace, now deceased, opened the cozy little breakfast and lunch joint 55 years ago ...

FWIW Larry Stone says the deal was most likely Furbush OR Pryor plus Franklin and one of Walker/Paxton/Hultzen.
Four teams on Upton's no-trade: Seattle, Boston, Cubs and Toronto.

Seattle is kind of random. The Mariners had the 3rd pick in the draft the year he went #1 and I wonder if maybe someone from the organization was rude to him pre-draft or something like that. That's of course just a completely wild guess on my part because I agree, they seem random.
Mariners? Maybe he thinks they irredeemably suck? They've been bad for a while now.
Edit: 6 makes sense.
I wasn't aware of this. That is a very powerful tool for agents.
Let me guess ....
What?? Sox have Carl Crawford, Darnell McDonald and Joey Gathright...right?
It's a thread about the Mariners, of course #6 makes sense.
If that was the case he would add San Diego, Miami, and others too. I agree the common thread is "places I wouldn't feel comfortable playing as a black man." Or paying taxes.
Washington state has no personal income tax. All California teams should be on the list if he wanted to avoid taxes.
Why would a black man not want to play in Chicago. It worked out pretty well for Michael Jordan and Barack Obama.
Unlike Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnestoa ...
The Marlins and Padres are much less likely to swing a trade for him. It's probably some combination of most likely to trade for him and places he doesn't want to play; given the limited number of NTC spots, any possible explanation or combinations of explanations is going to leave outsiders asking "if team x, then why not team Y?"
And who knows, it could be something as minor as Young not liking the travel (the Mariners routinely have the most travel time, because of their geographical isolation).
I don't think you need anything more complex than that (ie, not buying racism or park effects as driving force).
Conversely, the Danish version makes me want to visit Copenhagen!
...or more likely my desire to visit Denmark has nothing to do with that show.
Does Denmark have a well regarded TV/film industry? Through no specific effort on my part I've seen a fair amount of Danish TV and movies recently.
If I was a ball player the only team I'd invoke a NTC for would be Seattle. I wouldn't be able to stand the lack of sunshine there, I'd shoot myself.
coke to bfan
He only has 4 teams he can choose. OBVIOUSLY my comment is not exclusionary. These are not the only 4 cold cities. But thanks for pointing out the bleeping obvious. I was just pointing out one similarity that all 4 cities share. Cold April and Cold September/October.
Terribly Happy was pretty good.
It's not that bad, really. My tentative plan is to eventually relocate to the Olympic peninsula, though, so I may be biased. I think the Seattle area has everything you could want--mountains, ocean, a large, vibrant city, Vancouver is a short drive away, lots of sports teams and culture...I actually kind of hope its reputation as a depressing place to live sticks so not everyone will move there.
The only obvious flaws are that the public transit sucks (which you get used to, but if you're coming from the east coast it's a bit of a culture shock), and the rain does get annoying when it does it for like 32 consecutive days. It just makes everything slightly worse because everything is wet. But on a sunny day it's pretty much impossible to beat.
Why is Texas being so stingy with their prospects? Seems like they could match this deal and then some for Upton, and they have no place for Mike Olt or Jurickson Profar and are pretty loaded with pitching too. They have a window open now for who knows how long, seems like they should be a bit more aggressive.
Yes. The New Yorker Explores How And Why Danish TV Is So Awesome
They still have a very good team for 2013 without making a move. I think letting the kids develop rather than rushing them out the door is a decent plan. I love Upton but I think there are ample reasons to be concerned that he's only very good and not great so I can see a team deciding not to unload highly rated prospects for him.
They've shopped Olt and some of their top pitching prospects, but didn't find a match that they liked. They've certainly held tightly to Profar, but there's good reason to believe he's going to be a star, so I could see not wanting to let him go for something less than a Giancarlo Stanton-type trade.
Also what #35 said. Their current team has a reasonable shot at the playoffs, so they're going to keep their powder dry and see how things shake out.
I really liked Day of Wrath (Vredens dag). Apparently Copenhagen was a major film capital rivaling Los Angeles in the 1910s but most of those movies have been lost.

Sure, but it's not like the prospects can't lose value. If Olt doesn't hit, his stock goes down. You're making Profar play a brand new position, where he's very vulnerable to leg injury. Ask Daniel Murphy how fun it is to learn 2B in the majors.
Or they can turn into superstars. Unless the Rangers have a compelling need to make a deal, I don't see a reason to be moving guys like Profar or Olt or even a guy down the list a bit like Perez.
Right now it's looking like Profar is going to start the season in the minors, and will not be playing 2B regularly. Olt pretty clearly doesn't have a ton of value at the moment, given that the Rangers have been shopping him left and right and haven't come up with any deals they like. Probably wiser to give him a chance and see if he can become a useful part or increase his value as a trade chip.
I agree with #39; Andrus seems like the guy to move. Granted he's only under contract through 2014 and isn't a superstar, but I find it hard to believe there's not a team with playoff aspirations who can't use a 3-4 WAR SS.
The Kingdom was a pretty awesome TV series, too. I'm sorry that it seems like the planned third season will never come together, now that so many of the cast members have died.
Robothal even says:Which certainly seems odd. If you're an owner and your GM comes to you wanting to do (what we'll stipulate is) a terrible trade, sure seems like either you fire him right away if you seriously think that even bringing you this offer demonstrates gross incompetence, or more likely, just tell him "no." What sense does it make to let him proceed with a trade that you think is a disaster, and then fire him?
The Dogme movement is awhile back now, and some of its products are very mannered, but they did some exceedingly cutting-edge things in the 90s; The Celebration (1998) is very much worth watching. In recent years, Danish films have tended back toward more conventional storytelling, and there have been some terrific films by Susanne Bier (After the Wedding and In a Better World), and others with the actor Mads Mikkelsen that I've really enjoyed, like Flame & Citron and Adam's Apples. You may have seen all or most of these; short answer, yes, among the best current film cultures in Europe.
