Powerball odds? Juan Pierre’s homers are long shots, too

Odds of being attacked by a ~~shark~~ marlin: 1 in 11.5 million.

Pierre’s clout came leading off the bottom of the first for the Miami Marlins against the Cincinnati Reds.

Pierre’s homer was his first since June 23. He whooped when the ball went over the fence down the right-field line.

“I don’t know how to react to those things, so it’s just a spur-of-the-moment deal,” Pierre told reporters of his homer reaction. “That’s about the only time you’ll see me smiling on the baseball field.”

In years when the Marlins don't sign anyone else, they sign people away from the Phillies. Two years ago it was Greg Dobbs, and look how his career has blossomed. Now they have Pierre and Polanco. They should probably sign Jose Contreras as well. Do they have any Cubans at all?

Polanco looks pretty toasty at this point, though I suppose it's not completely out of the question that he could put up an 85ish OPS, and assuming he can still play plus defense at 2B/3B that's probably worth something. The Rotoworld note on his signing suggests that the Marlins are planning to have him be the starting 1B though, a position he's played 3 innings at in the majors, and that was 12 years ago.

Are the Marlins attempting to see if they can set a record for lowest attendance in the modern era?

Barney Darwin had a 79 OPS+ last year, and was still above replacement offensively with 1.3 oWAR. Aaron Hill had a 78 OPS+ in 2010, and that was good for 0.8 oWAR. The offensive replacement level at 2B is really low.

Free-agent third baseman Placido Polanco has agreed to a one-year contract with the Miami Marlins, pending a physical, sources told ESPN.com Thursday.

The deal is worth $2.75 million, according to the Miami Herald.

Polanco commented: "Despite the fact that it is only a one-year contract and I don't have a no-trade, I have been told that I am a part of their long-term plans here. And I totally believe them."

He's asked for his own parking spot and that's money out of Loria's pocket -- trade his ass!

Remember the brief-lived Sunshine League or whatever it was called of retired MLBers? That's what the Marlins are going for.

I think this is just a typo. He should be the starting 3B.
