Can someone tell me how to pronounce Mejia so I can impress friends and loved ones?
In about 15 years, I'm hoping it sounds just like "Seaver." For now, though, I believe it is
Pretty much say it just as you would like Maria, just with a "HE" instead of a "RE."
Say it soft, and it's almost like praying. Mejia.
Syndergaard's been pretty decent in AA-- 38:8 K:BB through 30 innings. Didn't expect him to make any sort of impact until 2015 at the earliest, but that timeline's in need of rethinking.
The Mets really ought to be able to spend some money this offseason. Only Wright and Niese are under contract and they have buyouts to Santana and Bay. But we are still talking about fewer than 35 million dollars on the books.
What free agents fill holes for the Mets that are worth (over) paying?
Anyone who is a an average OF. The pickings are definitely slim though. I think the optimistic, fanboy type plan would see the Mets sign a solid FA OF (maybe Hunter Pence? I dunno) and then use their excess pitching prospects and try and swing a deal for a bat like Stanton or Cargo. I'm not saying that is likely at all, just that is, like I said, the fanboy scenario.
It's one start. Let's see how he does in his next few.
I think they will bring in multiple starting OF this off-season, they pretty much have to.
For sure. But it's good to see him back as a starter. He put nice numbers in the minors at a very young age, owns a .3 HR/9 mark for his career, better than Wheeler, Montero, and Harvey.
Brian McCann at C?
They need to upgrade the offense, for sure, and the OF is the best place to do that. But I sort of think they have to see how things shake out in 2013-- though Byrd can't keep this up forever, it's at least worth exploring him as an option for next year. Same with Young. And Puello will warrant a spot, hopefully sooner rather than later. Plus Duda. So I think 1 OF, a very good one, should get things done
(a net positive on the whole, but between Tejada, Davis, Niese, and, to a lesser extent, Murphy, that's a big chunk of the major league core).
Anyone who is a an average OF. The pickings are definitely slim though.
If Davis continues to be awful this year, do the Mets at least consider giving Duda the everyday first baseman job for a year to see if he can handle it? He's definitely not an outfielder but I think he could be a decent stopgap at first for a few seasons.
But the other 3 guys really do nothing for me. I don't see anyone in the system who I think projects as an average OF for opening day next year. (Maybe I am being hard on Byrd, but he's about to turn 36 and he's striking out nearly 29% of the time).
The first two, especially Davis, really hurt. I've just about given up on him. Tejada still might deserve another shot, but based on public comments, it seems like Sandy is very down on him.
The way I see it is you keep a spot warm for Puello, and you play some combo of those other guys in the meantime. Depending on August and September, I also think Lagares could play his way into the conversation on his defense alone. I'm sure someone will offer Byrd a decent contract, so that'll likely be a decision taken out of their hands, but if he's willing to come back at a reasonable price, I could see the logic of doing so.
But even assuming that, I think they need to bring in 2 OF. Like I said, as far as I'm concerned, they have 0 average OF for opening day next year. So even penciling Puello in for sometime next year, you still need 2. Lagares is a great glove in CF, for sure, but 7 BB and 47 K's is really scary to me.
I'd rather spend on 2 OF, and then I guess try and get away with some platoon or something at the other outfield spot, and bring Tejada back to play SS.
Just seems like bringing in 2 OFs who will clearly be better than what's on-hand will be challenging.
You have much more faith in the current Met OF contingent than I do.
