Boz pays homage to the gritty, gutsy, scrappy, first place 2013 underdog Yankees:
Read More...Perhaps for the first time in their history, the Yankees now epitomize exactly the kind of team that always used to try to beat them: a group of inspired-by-adversity, too-old-or-too-young, one-last-chance players who band together to prove that baseball is a team game, not just an aggregation of talent and fat contracts.
Put a few all-star seasons, such as Cano’s 31 RBI, Kiroda’s 1.99 ERA and Rivera’s 16 ...

1. Walks Clog Up the Bases posted on September 12, 2012 at 11:06 PM # hit 0 | hit 0Too bad the Sox couldn't pull it out tonight. The O's just can't find a way to pull away from the Yanks.
The ump called him out on a 3-2 pitch that was about six inches low and outside. He really did look like a Fortissimo Crescendo Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius out there, but the strike zone was erratic all night and both teams got several blatantly bad calls in their favor.
Just a really impressive play, especially for a 20 year old shortstop playing out of position.
/Manny, Manny, Manny.
Oh, and an awesome play by Machado.
Pitch FX says it was 0 inches low and 0 inches outside.
Okay, in that case my conscience is clear, and the umps still owe us one for that botched game-ending call in Baltimore last Saturday.

When Well was on the Jays he was like one of those early-aughts baseball games where there only seemed like a handful of possible places for the hitter to hit the ball. He'd either pop it up or hit a line drive home run to the exact same spot in the left-field gap. Even when he was going good Vernon Wells popped up more than any human in history. I realize it's fairly easy to look this up and confirm it...but I'd rather just have the comfort of "knowing" this fact in my heart.
Lemme guess: "Vernon Wells is a professional baseball player! This guy knows how to get it done. He's been there. He's a proven veteran."
And that's before Harry pulled his lips off Wells' butt cheek. I wish MLB Network would give him the rest of
the yearhis life off, or just relegate him to Diamond Demos since he actually imparts some useful knowledge in some of those.Oh, and HOW 'BOUT THEM O's!!
Hardy deserves almost as much credit as Manny for that play, though. I'm still not sure how he was there, given that (according to Manny) it wasn't a planned play.

"He's just missing, almost on that one...and we're talking about a 3-run homer there."
You're right. That's a case of two guys playing really heads-up baseball. It only works because they were both thinking about other possibilities throughout the play.
To be fair, Brandon Inge, Bartolo Colon and George Kottaras were important pieces in playoff teams last year.
You're right on Colon and Kottaras, but I don't think you can say Inge's 80 OPS+ and -0.6 WAR were an important piece of Detroit's success.
The rookies are walking fewer guys in the Big Leagues than they did in the minor leagues. It's uncanny. I again want to thank the Red Sox for giving us back Curt Young.
I'm a Cardinals fan, and I approve of this message.
He rocks!
Harold Reynolds would still be playing Alvin Davis and Mike Moore if he was a GM. "They're in wheelchairs.....but they've done it before! Proven veterans with experience! ".
On the bright side Wells' OBP is up to .271 from .248 last year.
Did seem like a strange time to give Jesse Chavez his A's debut.
I had circled that series on the calendar back in April as one that would define the AL playoff picture.
