just to explain why i'm kind of giddy about this, despite the admittedly large improbability, if the phillies clinch the second wildcard spot on the final day of the season, and then win the wildcard play-in game, and then win their series in the divisional round, that would mean:
eliminating the cardinals
eliminating the braves
eliminating the nationals
Even though the Pirates are only 2.5 games back, it feels to me like they're done. They blew so many golden opportunities to win that mini marathon last night; just a brutal loss for their chances.
And Gio becomes the first in the majors to 19 wins, giving his Cy Young bid a boost. Dickey gets his chance to respond tonight.

I guess the Cardinals must not be doing that well?
It seems like the Pirates lose every day and yet they are still only 2.5 out.
Letting Alfredo Simon wiggle off the hook in the 13th (bases loaded, no out) will be one of the situations that Pirate players, coaches and fans think about in those long hours before sleep in the offseason.
But Votto did make a great throw from his knees to get the second out at home.

It was, at worst, their third-worst loss in the last week.

Actually, I know you guys around here hate on him, but he does seem to have quite a bit of pop. The future!
I really like Hairston. I'd definitely bring him back next year if he'd sign.

Cardinals are 4-9 in their past 13. And yet they still lead the (second) wild-card standings by a game or game and a half each day. Which, of course, doesn't speak well of the Dodgers and Pirates.
Adrian Gonzalez is hitting .242/.304/.371 for the Dodgers. His only home run came in his first at-bat. I guess it's the move back to the tougher division/league.

Awesome.

I keep expecting to come here and see the Cardinals tied with someone or even behind someone and it hasn't happened yet. This team needs something to light a fire under their asses though. Last night was one of those games where you just ignore and go on with the next day. Hopefully San Diego lets us win 2 out of 3.
Hunter Pence still leads the 2012 Phillies in home runs. Of course he's also second in at-bats.

The Cards had the highest run differential in baseball for a good chunk of the season. Then, from Aug 28 to 31, they were outscored 32-1. That was not a good stretch of baseball. :-) Over that 13-game stretch, they've been outscored 82-41. Methinks the pitching has been a bit problematic.

since sweeping the astros which isn't saying much the cards are 7-10.
but st. louis has houston 6 more times this season so they have a cushion.

I'm still amazed that they overachieved as much as they did in the first half, considering how much they suck.

And that one run was unearned...
Oh, were the Braves playing well? I couldn't see them that far back.
JPop, formerly JRoll, given second life when the catcher dropped his easy foul pop, just passed Pence with his 18th HR.
