I don't know much about technology, but I'm really surprised that in the year 2013 we don't have a way to know EXACTLY which programs are being watched on every television in America.
Many many years ago I was privy to the Nielsen radio data for the market I lived in. At the time (at least) their sampling really didn't do well when working with small numbers. Three of the four college stations in the market had a zero rating for most of their schedules, and a good percentage of the ~25 AM stations had segments that got a zero rating.
On Saturday Sept. 14, with a loss against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Astros set an all-time low for viewership in the Houston area with an average of 915 households.
Just to put that into comparison, according to the Nielsen ratings posted by The Houston Chronicle, the WNBA game on NBA-TV between the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx drew an average of about 1,500 households in the Houston area.
Last season, the Astros had a game in which they averaged 1,100 households. At that time, newspaper said it was the lowest rating game the team had since the 1980s.
I'm in Dallas instead of Houston but would still gladly watch every pitch of a 20-inning Astros/Marlins September game instead of one quarter of the Super Bowl.

How relevant are TV ratings at this point?
"Game of Thrones" seems to have broken the DVR model - everyone was talking about it the next day, so if you didn't watch it upon first air, you both missed out and likely had to walk around with your fingers in your ears all of the following day.
Guys - I appreciate your input but I think you misunderstand me. I'm not looking for explanations. I get that it (mostly) works. I get the math. I get the reason. I'm simply telling you it doesn't SEEM like it should work. There isn't going to be anything you can do to get over that with me. I'm also not claiming I'm right. Just talking about perception.
