Scat Ballou: Is this the way to make a shiity column…? You bet it is!
Read More...Now, the Sox have taken it to a new level with the Brothers Drew.
Neither is very good, but there’s something about a Drew that whoever Boston’s general manager is can’t resist, be it Theo Epstein or Ben Cherington.
OK, J.D. Drew had a couple of respectable seasons with the Red Sox. And, OK, Stephen Drew is a good defensive shortstop. Still, starting with Opening Day of 2010, Boston has committed $37.5 million ...

1800 games of a 138 OPS+. If he gets to 3,000 games at that level I'll take him seriously as a HOF candidate. No, it's not happening.
(I basically agree, for what it's worth.)
Pretty much, yes. An insane five-year stretch would do it also, but that could almost be said for any established player.
Age and injury are the two main issues, but he is still a fantastic hitter. That is the hurry to sign him. And it's only a two-year deal. He is a top drawer hitter.
I think the number of inter-league games stays basically the same. They're just spread across the whole season.
Which is a positive, since it makes it easier to use them as off days, which Ortiz is going to need occasionally anyway.

Not really. The non-DH days will still come 2 or 3 in a row, when they play a series in an NL park. No DH needs 3 days in a row off. maybe a slight benefit, but marginal.
Let me introduce you to my good friend Nick Johnson.
He likes to take his days off in chunks of 100.
If you sign Johnson, you basically need a shadow DH.
Yes. So instead of 9 in a row on a NL roadtrip, they now spread them out over 3 trips. So they can save 2 off days they might have given him at another time.
Ortiz is, far and away, the best DH option on the FA market. He's no worse than the 2nd best hitter on the FA market (Hamilton has a case). Even in his partial season, he put up 2.9 WAR. He's going to cost you a lot less than Hamilton and even Swisher.
