here and i was hoping that brandon would be the first Black guy to get labeled "gritty" but nooooo
Phillips has had a really interesting career. He was a top prospect with the Expos. He was the key piece in the Bartolo Colon deal -- Sizemore and Lee were seen as lottery tickets/ complementary prospects. But he was a complete flop for four seasons with the Indians, and got flipped to Cincy for Jeff Stevens. He was expected to be a utlity guy at that point, with a chance to advance a bit more (he was 25 at the time) -- maybe hold down a starting job with some luck. Yet he turned into a fine everyday player.
You have to presume Dusty and the coaching staff deserve some credit for that development -- a reverse Corey Patterson, if you will.
Good for him for getting it together and becoming the ballplayer he could become, but the delay was completely on him being a knucklehead for a couple years
