MLB hoping for large replay expansion in 2014

Major League Baseball appears set for a vast expansion of video review by umpires in 2014 and is examining whether all calls other than balls or strikes should be subject to instant replay.

Replay has been in place for home run calls since August 2008. Commissioner Bud Selig initially wanted to add trap plays and fair/foul calls down the lines for 2013, but change was put off while more radical options were examined.

I just submitted Stark's piece a few minutes ago and I was a bit more positive about it than Craig is. To me it read like MLB being smart about how they did this. I too hate the idea of a challenge system (hell, I don't really like replay but it's inevitable) but I think the fact that MLB is taking their time rather than rushing into is a good sign. It would be very easy for MLB to simply say "we're doing it like the NFL" and get a lot of good publicity but the fact that they are willing to wait a year in the interest of getting it right gives me optimism that they will in fact get it right.

Drop the "System" and you've got a working acronym. I propose we call it "Rachel" anyhow.

I don't like this idea, but if they do it, I hope its a better system than pulling a red flag out of a sock.

This sounds like a really good thing:

MLB is gravitating toward one of two options: (A) adding a fifth umpire to every crew and having the extra umpire review calls in each ballpark, or (B) assigning an extra umpiring "crew" to monitor calls from a central location

I'm not hung up about replay, but MLB first implemented it in mid-season -- either start it on Opening Day or not at all.

I wish I could make a mash up video of this, but MLB makes that very difficult. My very least favorite part of football is the replays. So of course MLB will have to copy the system verbatim.

I like B. The "war room" style is how hockey does it and hockey replay is done very well. Well except for that part where they can only replay during a stoppage, so sometimes 5 minutes of gameplay can be invalidated after it has already been played.

I'm a periodic football watcher (mainly playoffs), but it seems like there are replays all the damn time now.
