Is this the crap that mlb trouts out there during the day?
Greg - have you read "Diamond Appraised" by Craig Wright and Tom House? They discuss a variety of baseball topics, Craig with the more sabermetric approach and Tom with the more traditional approach - it's better than the usual debate discussions mainly because House is a little more rational than your Harold Reynolds types. I found it to be an enjoyable read.
Harold Reynolds is not afraid to minstrel it up a little.
Well Campbell kinda lost it a bit with something like "Over the next year? Look, you force me to take the ridiculous position that I'd rather have Ordonez and now you're going to take away the only possible argument which is that he's younger."
I want to say someone at ESPN got frustrated they had to take such an obviously stupid position once too. Maybe Mark May?
The IBB are interesting as Votto has 14 while Craig has only 2.
I'm saber-minded but I can see plenty of justification to take Craig here.
Depends on the game situation I guess. With bases loaded, I'd take Votto; but with first base open and two outs, I might lean toward Craig. Depends who is up next. I'm guessing they didn't get into that much depth though.
House is the one who's said some players were using in his day (the 70s) so it's not a surprise that he says they'd have been using better stuff if they could.
When he was on ESPN back in the day, he had his moments where he was actually informative. Now its pretty clear he's been asked to play up the old school style and be more argumentative. His job is to be Kenny's foil.
It's like high school debate only with worse logic, fewer facts and more histrionics.
Please send this guy to the Red Sox, myself and the other rational fans would be more then happy to take this seemingly non-RBI producing slacker off of the Reds hands.
Exactly. His purpose on that show is to make Kenny look smart while being a cartoon villain for all the saber-minded viewers. It's a Stepin Fetchit routine. If they really wanted to utilize Reynolds as an analyst and bring knowledge and value to the telecast, they'd do segments where he explains elements of the actual play on the field. When he was on Baseball Tonight he'd occasionally do that sort of thing - talk through and show how an infielder positions himself on a play, or talk about glove work for a given type of hitter - and it was fantastic. He's wasted on Kenny's show, just there to be "the former player/stupid jock who doesn't get OBP and loves RBIs."
