Shaughnessy is too good to have to invent anything. He neither invented anything in this instance nor accused Ortiz of using steroids and their cousins. What he did was take his skepticism and his curiosity, good traits for a newspaperman to have, and ask Ortiz about steroids. Ortiz’s responses did not indicate anger of being accused of wrong doing.

I would compare the Ortiz column to the columns I have written about Mike Piazza and my suspicions about his possible use of steroids. I ...

If the point of this article is to say that the penalty for cheating isn't nearly enough to deter it, that's possibly valid. He sort of loses his way when he starts to talk about statistics.

MLB doesn't even give out a plaque or a trophy for a batting title. It's not even really an award; it's just a statistic. So what exactly are they supposed to do about this? If the BBWAA wants to adopt a rule about not giving their awards to players who test positive, that's their business.

I don't know if the article's title came from author or editor, but it states the exact opposite of the facts. MLB's existing rule for AB short of the minumum, made years ago, isn't being bent but upheld. Black is white. Up is down.

Isn't the complaint that they're not bending the rules to punish a cheater? They certainly aren't bending the rules to help him. They're simply applying the rules as written.

It's nice of him, but he's still the batting champion. Those hits and at bats still happened and it sets a weird precedence to pretend they didn't. Again, a nice gesture on his part.

I think without the 502 PAs that it's okay for someone else to be the champ. It would only be by odd rule that he'd get it in the first place. If he had one more PA, then he'd be on the leaderboard and yet not the champion, which would be crazy.

I think the additional PA rule is the stupidest thing, so I'm pleased to see that we won't have a batting champion that way. On the other, this "one-time amendment" thing is equally stupid. Bad times.

If they want to get rid of the PA rule from here on out, I'm fine with that, but a one time mulligan just seems lame to me. Why not just have a minimum # of PA's be the standard and be done with it? They don't finagle innings for the ERA title, the only other rate stat anyone cares about so why do it for BA?

Well because you can give up an infinite number of runs in 1 inning, but you can't strike out an infinite number of times in 1 at-bat, obviously.

Doesn't the one PA rule exist only because somebody everybody wanted to win a batting title had a huge lead but not quite enough PAs?

Instead of "Batting Title", let Melky have it but call it the "league leader in base hits per official At Bat". It's justifiable removal of some of the glamour.
