In case anyone hasn't seen it yet, the Pirates traded Brad Lincoln for Travis Snider. As a Pirates fan I find the deal suspiciously good, as if the Jays know something about Snider that we don't.

Nope, every single Jays fans I`ve seen online is livid. If it`s not part of something bigger, then it`s going to be even tougher to digest. Worst part is seeing either Eric Thames in left field (brutal butcher is a kind description) or Rajai Davis, who has no business starting against RHP.

Presumably this means the Jays believe Gose is ready to stay in the outfield fulltime.

Gose to this point has looked pretty overmatched at the plate. The Jays have now inexplicably acquired 5 relievers (Happ, Carpenter, Lyon, Lincoln and Delabar) in the past 10 days; for what purpose remains to be seen.

Snider-Lincoln looks interesting. I could never keep Snider and Lind straight but, OK, Snider's probably the better and more promising of the two. He and Lincoln are an interesting set. Snider still doesn't look like he can really hack it as an ML hitter as the K-rate is just too high. But he had a great year at AAA and his small sample so far this year isn't promising but has shown awesome power (in 37 PA). Lincoln looked horrible in the majors before this year now suddenly he's K'ing over 9/9 and walking just 2 (and giving up a few too many HR).
Probably both guys are small sample flukes and this will end up being pretty meaningless. It's possible that both guys have turned a significant corner and this will be a bit of a wash. But there's a real chance one team got something for nothing here. I guess I'd take the Pirates side.

Snider is a guy that I could see flourishing under Hurdle. Not that Toronto hasn't developed hitters recently, or at least had some established guys bust out, but Snider's a guy who didn't seem to do well with whatever philosophy they were coaching in Toronto.
Well i dont think they will be on the next good cubs team. Might as well trade high on barney and smaridjzia

I'm not livid, but I doubt it's really the right time to deal Snider.
With that said, the Jays bullpen is starting to look surprisingly good. Perhaps they're thinking they've managed to stay afloat through the worst of the injuries and are rolling the dice a little on going on a run when Bautista and Morrow get back.
I like Snider, but the odds seem a little low on him being great at this point; reminds me of Josh Phelps. At least Lincoln is on the right side of thirty and having a good year.
Wow, a quick glance at the Pirates' BB-Ref page suggests Casey McGehee leads the team in ABs as a first baseman. Is this correct?????

No chance Lincoln gets a look as a starter?
It's possible, but the Jays seem tentatively satisfied with their rotation, as they somehow keep getting quality starts from Carlos Villanueva and Aaron Laffey (no seriously.) When they traded for JA Happ, he went straight to the bullpen, despite being exclusively a starter with Houston. Although, if Cecil continues to get bombed or the wheels finally come off Laffey they'll be forced to give Happ or Lincoln a start.

The frustrating thing is the Jays never go on a run. They go from world-beaters in 2 of 3 to the Tigers, then completely crumble against Fister and then the Mariners. They slapped Boston around, but got it handed to them by Oakland the very next series. The Jays are again at .500. They haven`t had a real prolonged winning streak, even a 10 in a row streak, since 1998.
I see an improved bullpen, but Cecil is still starting, Romero and Alvarez should be in the minors or having starts skipped, and the biggest rotation aces are Aaron Laffey and Carlos Villenueva, neither of who projected onto the first 10 of SP depth. Now J.A. Happ is the fallback, and then the abyss; they have looked at almost every possible AAA and many AA pitchers.

there were rumors that the phillies were dangling shane victorino in a straight up deal for lincoln, so there could be some movement there.

Yeah, they signed him mostly to be the short half of a first base platoon with Garrett Jones as well as Pedro Alvarez insurance. Unfortunately their corner outfielders (Jose Tabata and Alex Presley) completely collapsed, Jones became the full-time right fielder, and there was no one else left to play first. At the least, Snider should ensure McGehee doesn't see nearly as many AB against RHP.
By the way I meant the 2013 Cubs looking like the Spiders. And I noticed you left DeJesus off your list. :-)
Anyway, I agree that probably none of those guys are gonna be on the next good Cubs team should we even see one again :-). But going into 2013 with Casey Coleman as our most veteran starter seems a wee bit scary to me. And an offense and defense of Rizzo and Castro and nobody. And there's very little on the FA market over the next couple of years. I know it probably wouldn't be Spiders bad because they'd grab enough Dejesus, Maholm, etc. types to not suck that badly but boy that would be one stinker team. Granted, Barney, Marmol and Samardzija could all turn stinker tomorrow and they're in much the same boat.
Obviously it would all depend on what we got back. Barney for somebody actually above-average and with potential to be good to excellent -- sure, make the deal.

Rosenthal seems to think Towers is working on a big deal for the DBacks, potentially involving exchanging Justin Upton for a frontline starter.
I don't understand the urgency to sell low on Thames and Snider. The Jays don't have the horses to make a run this year. These deals rank as a huge wtf to me.

If that's the case, then he's gone about building up Upton's trade value in a peculiar way. Ever since this Throw Upton From the Train movement started in Arizona, I've quietly hoped maybe Thed could buy low on him and bring him out to Wrigley.
