Sox’s Gavin Floyd to undergo season-ending surgery

Chicago White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd could be sidelined through the 2014 season after the team announced Monday he will undergo surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament and a torn flexor muscle in his right arm.

Floyd will undergo surgery Tuesday by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. The expected time of recovery for Floyd, 30, is from 14 to 19 months.

Floyd suffered the injury while delivering a pitch April 27 against Tampa. ...

Sometimes he was referred to as Joel, and sometimes as Joe; I could never figure out which he preferred. He was part of that great A's bullpen in 1972. Good to hear that he's still kicking.

I know about Horlen mainly because Steve Kreviskey did a couple of presentations at SABR meetings touting him for the 1967 Cy Young Award 35 years after the fact.

He & Joe Hoerner were both pitching when I started following baseball. That was very confusing.

It's a little odd that his career ended with that '72 season. He pitched well out of the Oakland pen, but then Finley released him, probably in a cost-cutting move. No one was willing to give him a major league deal. He pitched out of the Indian farm system in '73, but never made it back to the bigs.
