ESPN: Olney: Source: WBC to cover salaries

Players injured during the World Baseball Classic will have their salaries paid by the WBC organization while they are unable to play for their major league teams, according to an MLB source.

That would mean that players such as Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira and Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez will be paid by the WBC during their respective absences.

Cool. I'd like to see Brazil have a good game. Gomes was not appalling for the Jays last year, given he should never have been called up in the first place.

If Brazil were to somehow win this pool (highly unlikely, but they ARE the best of the "worst" teams), someone has to force one of the players to become mononymic, like Pele or Nene.

Panama's obviously the favorite, but Brazil's playing surprisingly well so far. If Matsumoto could have hung onto a pickoff throw Panama might not have scored.

Yeah, I knew that. Mota quoted Kelly as being concerned about his pitching - sounds like he's going to be using guys early and often.

Lee drops a throw he should have caught, giving Brazil a gift run and a 2-1 lead after 2 1/2.

Gomes has some talent, although I don't know that he's a catcher. I can see him having a decent career as a utility player who can also catch.

Yeah, I get that vibe too from what I've seen and heard of him. One of those guys who can play anywhere.

I heard somewhere that every team in these qualifiers is given at least a $200,000 infusion of cash from MLB. Can't emphasize how important that is, especially for the countries where baseball isn't a big sport. A lot of baseball federations lost funding from governments and olympic committees after it was dropped from Olympics. WBCQ money literally is a gift from heaven for some of these teams- although not necessarily any in this pool.

Yes, highest limit in qualifiers is 85 or whatever is needed to finish the batter you hit 85 at.

By the way, in doing some research on Brazil I came across this. Didn't remember that Brazil came within an eyelash of knocking off Cuba in the 2003 World Cup.

I seem to remember that in the last Baseball World Cup, when it was held in Panama, it did rain every damn day. It did a number on the tourney's attendance.
