#4: I don't think that's right. I've been watching baseball for almost 30 years at this point, and it definitely seems to go in waves. You've always had individual umps who seemed to think that people were there to see them and would perceive any imagined slight like it was Pearl Harbor, but it seems to me now that that's the default setting, where I don't think it used to be.
Maybe it's a league directive to curtail the potty-mouthed players now that there are microphones everywhere.
