Pedroiadolia: The psychological phenomenon of seeing wacko images on dirty uniforms.
Read More...The narratives around the two players, however, could not be different. Pedroia is almost the prototype of the over-achieving “scrappy” player. He is a 5’8” middle infielder who does the little things well. This ignores that he was also a second round draft choice who played baseball at a top baseball school. Cano, on the other hand is bigger, more athletic and does not project scrappiness at all. Throughout ...

After all, the bullpen is SO deep and the farm system is SO loaded with guys who can step in right away and help next year.
The only reasonable argument for Mo to retire would be to preserve the over 200 ERA+. But I don't think Mo is so concerned about that.
I go around and around on retirements. There is a part of me that wants to see players retire before they get old. The idea of going out on top sounds really good to me. At the same time I think there is something about the Steve Carlton retirement tour and while it was sad to see Lefty get knocked around and released by about 5 teams there is something gratifying that we truly saw every useful pitch of Steve Carlton's life. When Carlton was finally done, he was done. There is not a time when you think "I wonder if he had one more year left", it was undoubtedly over.
As a fan I'm selfishly glad I didn't miss anything. If I were a player I think I'd be able to enter retirement gracefully knowing that I truly "left it all on the field."
Pedro Martinez's 100th loss makes me sad. Greg Maddux's 999 walks make me happy. Numbers are silly, and so am I.
How long has Matthews been doing this anyway?
Up to Mo. If he wants to give it a go, of course you bring him to spring training, see how it goes. Proceed from there.
"You don't retire at your convenience," Reggie Jackson once said. "You don't die when you're ready ... There are no announcements. There are no invitations. You're just gone."
But I think that my opinion is completely worthless in this. It's his decision, and that of the Yankees.
He went with Android naturally.
When Rivera comes out of the bullpen, the PA asks people not to use their cell phones. Might mess with the programming.
And I'm not a Yankees fan...
"Well, we're paying $15 million to Mo this year. Wha?"
Choking on a Reggie bar.
