    Curtis Granderson has fractured left pinky finger

    The Yankees just can’t catch up to all these injuries. Less than two weeks after he returned from a fractured right forearm, Curtis Granderson suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal (left hand) in his left hand when Cesar Ramos hit him with a pitch in the fifth inning. No word on a timetable for his return, but it’s same injury Alex Rodriguez had last season. He missed six weeks. Crud.

    Why do people keep blaming Swisher for not catching that ball? If he'd caught it, it would have made the announcers squeal and it would be on all the highlight reels this morning. You can't have it both ways.

    Because it was a catchable ball.

    Oh I fully agree. That's not my point. My point is that every single time a player leaves his feet and catches the ball, everyone goes crazy about it. We either have to accept that not every diving catch is a highlight-reel play, or else not blame Swisher for missing this one. I can't stand it being both ways.

    Swisher didn't leave his feet until after the ball passed him. He didn't need to leave his feet at all to make the play.

    I bet you guys that tonight, in one of the two games, someone will make a catch similar to the one Swisher should have made and the announcers etc will act like it was a magnificent, gold glove play.

    It's possible for a play to be a nice play yet also be a play that should get made. Beltran in the first made one such play tonight. If the outfielder doesn't have to leave his feet or crash into anything it should be caught. Swisher didn't have to do either, he simply misjudged where he should put his glove.

    What about the Jackson play on the Chavez blast into the gap? That was a very nice play. He seemed to have a line on that the whole time, but whilst it was unfolding, I was thinking, oh that's a gapper for sure.

    Swisher should have caught it, seeing as how catching balls hit to the outfield is a primary job requirement. That being said, you won't see very many balls hit harder to the opposite field than that, and thus it didn't surprise me that he missed it. That was an absolute laser, and it's unlikely Swisher sees that kind of ball hit his way more than once a season.

    It certainly looked like he couldn't see it. That has got to be scary when a guy hits one that hard in your direction and you can't see it.
