    Jeter would hardly be the first person to pack on weight while waiting for a leg injury to rehab but I hate still photos as a means of "proof." He certainly looks bad there but still photos often can be misleading.

    38 years old, non-weight-bearing ankle just doesn't help keep you in shape. My hope: He holds his own next year. I have absolutely no expectations of him reaching his offensive stats from last year, and I think Jeter is going to have adjust his expectations on his playing defense on the field. I will be ecstatic if he hits 280/350/350 and doesn't hit the DL for more than 50 games.

    I wouldn't have noticed the gut as much as the arms. Those things look like twigs.

    Jeter's never really had the kind of guns you usually see on MLB hitters. Some gossip mag had a photo of him and his model du jour on vacation a year or two ago, and shirtless Jeter was not a particularly impressive sight back then, at least by pro athlete standards.

    Of course, I hope he's even FATTER than the photo indicates. Even though I'm a Yankee fan, the hilarity potential of Fat Derek playing shortshort outweighs all other considerations.

    Especially if you're a shortstop with 3000 hits and have spent your entire career with one team in the AL East. Cal Ripken is only 52, but if you told somebody who didn't know who he was that he was 70 they wouldn't doubt you.

    Shatner certainly looks fantastic for 81, but Cal Ripken looks a lot older than 52.

    This is Ripken at 35. He has always looked much older than his age.

    I dunno, I saw Ripken maybe a year or two ago on tv and couldn't believe how spherical he looked. Maybe I caught him on a particularly bad, water-retaining day.

    The best thing about that picture (the one of fat Jeter) is that it looks like they caught him mid-belch, or perhaps as he's battling a bit of chicken parm is trying to make it back up to the light.

    1. He's always had kind of a baby face, and he actually doesn't look fat in those pictures. The wind is blowing his shirt at an unflattering angle and he's burping or something, which makes it look like he has a double chin. All that said, #### Derek Jeter, he's my least favorite player.

    For some reason multiple angles of this scene exist. Ordonez looks particularly amazing here.
