Maybe Schilling knows he can't win and just wants to go down fighting rather than meekly skulking away from the scene. Like all his idols from WWII and Lord of the Rings would have done.
Chaffee is an independent (former moderate Republican ousted in the primaries by conservatives). But his approval ratings are in the toilet. If the Dems prop up a reasonable candidate in 2014, I'm guessing Chaffee is cooked.
If they can avoid getting their candidate endorsed by Schilling.
