It may be hard to understand how all of this happened without understanding the ancient, one-sided rivalry that exists between Rhode Island, a state of just 1,000 square miles, and Massachusetts, which squeezes Rhode Island on two sides like a vise. Massachusetts is the land of the Red Sox and the Kennedys; Rhode Island makes do with the Red Sox’ Class AAA affiliate in Pawtucket and has a history of rampant political corruption.

This whole story reminds me of the Batman: TAS episode where Bruce Wayne is desperate to acquire a video game company so he can move it to Gotham and create some tech jobs there. Maybe Rhode Island figured that if moving a video game company to town was Batman's business strategy, it was surely good enough for them.

It doesn't seem like a good idea to antagonize the governor while you're being investigated for fraud or whatever. If Chafee wasn't going after Schilling before, he probably will now.

Shutting the hell up might lead to introspection, which is very dangerous to a conservative. He's better off continuing to yell that everything is everyone else's fault, and that he's a holy martyr for the cause of the free market.

Isn't Lincoln Chafee a pretty reasonable, middle of the road guy for a pol? Schilling can't win this one, I think, and I am confident on reflection he'll decide discretion is the better part of valor.

Chaffee is an independent (former moderate Republican ousted in the primaries by conservatives). But his approval ratings are in the toilet. If the Dems prop up a reasonable candidate in 2014, I'm guessing Chaffee is cooked.
