1. Jim WisinskiOnly one 2003 Devil Ray has pitched in the majors in 2011. (name him! -- not that hard)
The only others to pitch in the majors past 2007 are Waechter, Sosa, Jesus Colome, Bobby Seay, Brandon Backe, Seth McClung, and Jon Switzer.
That '03 team was also the last big league stop of one Chris Truby...
I don't think this is as rare as you imply.
Here's a complete list of 2003 Braves pitchers still active in 2011:
Jason Marquis
Complete list of 2004 Braves pitchers still active in 2011:
Juan Cruz
(Dan Meyer still bouncing around in the minors)
Complete list of 2003 Cubs pitchers still active in 2011:
Zambrano
Wood
Sergio Mitre
Kyle Farnsworth
Juan Cruz
And lets not forget the comeback of Mark Prior... any day now
Actually, it's not that easy either.
2003 Giants pitchers who have faced a major league batter in '11:
Joe Nathan
Kevin Correia
Rivera (Obviously)
Jose Contreras
Randy Choate
The 1993 Yankees, for those active in 2001:
Sterling Hitchcock
Bob Wickman
Jose Lima
Mike Myers
plus Brian Moehler would come back in 2005.
Impressive. Did he ever pitch with that third arm?
Couldn't come up with it, even forgot that Gaudin was first up in 2003. I still insist that the trade sending him away was the dumbest of Lamar's many dumb moves.
2003 A's:
Hudson
Zito
Lilly
Harang
Duchscherer and Harden may pitch again.
Wakefield (who was already 36 in 2003)
Lowe
Lyon
Arroyo
Bruce Chen (who I didn't even remember as ever being on the Red Sox)
Livan Hernandez
Javier Vazquez
Luis Ayala
Scott Downs
Claudio Vargas and Chad Cordero just retired last week.
Rodrigo Lopez
1993 Orioles had a lot of young arms and some serious longevity; those who pitched in 2001:
Mussina
Moyer
Rhodes
Olson
Mills
Telford
Artie Rhodes has pitched more effectively than Rodrigo Lopez in 2011...
Tomko(he's pitching for the Rangers)
Isringhausen
Haren
and Esteban Yan(who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006, but is still in the minors)
PI says that there are 150 such pitchers from 2003,(which averages out to 5 per team of course) but of course as Esteban Yan shows, that includes people still pitching in the minors.
Halladay
Doug Davis (totally forgot he was ever a Jay, much less had 11 starts)
Trever Miller
Mark Hendrickson and Vinnie Chulk might get out of AAA.
I don't know if Kelvim Escobar is still rehabbing his shoulder, or if he just retired.
To me, it's more fun to see where the fringe players went. Pete Walker is pitching coach for Toronto's AA team. Rule 5 pick turned closer Aquilino Lopez was pitching in Korea. Never-weres Corey Thurman and Jason Kershner were playing in the independent leagues, and Josh Towers is currently getting lit up (7.94 ERA) while pitching for Oaxaca of the Mexican League.
What amazes me is that as dumb as the Gaudin-for-Cash trade was (and trading anything more than a stick of prechewed bubble gum for Kevin Cash is very very dumb), since leaving Tampa Gaudin has produced (by bb-ref), a grand total of 0 WAR. He's had some bouts of usefulness, but the damage that trade did is remarkably limited.
The Guerreros released him in early April.
Missed that press release, wonder how come it wasn't front page news. Of course that did remind me to check on Hiram Bocachica who looks like he's still playing....I didn't know bb-reference had records to the Japanese leagues..how did I miss that?
If Yan Can Pitch, So Can You!
Thanks. I thought that was what had happened, but baseball reference doesn't carry international transaction info yet.
Aaron Cook
Brian Fuentes
Darren Oliver
Javier Lopez
Plus Nelson Cruz, who is now a power-hitting outfielder for the Texas Rangers.
Joe Beimel
Nelson Figueroa
Ryan Vogelsong
Dennys Reyes
Mike Gonzalez
John Grabow
Also a couple of guys active in the minors, of whom Oliver Perez is probably the most likely to make it back to the Show at some point.
Bartolo Colon
Mark Buehrle
Jon Garland
Damaso Marte
Although Marte probably won't pitch this year, it seems.
Brett Tomko is actually now on that same AAA squad. The Rangers decided to go with Dave Bush as their Dodgy Long Relief Solution and called up Michael Kirkman and sent Tomko down.
and for the 2003 Brewers, still active:
Doug Davis
(Both Braden Looper and Todd Wellemeyer indirectly retired due to this guy. Which ex-Card's career will DD claim next?)
Josh Beckett
Carl Pavano
AJ Burnett
Brad Penny
In Minors
Dontrelle Willis (had no idea he was with Cincy now)
Nate Bump
In Jail for attempted double homicide
Ugueth Urbina
Derek Lowe
Tim Wakefield
Bronson Arroyo
Yeah, other than the presence of Kevin Cash on the team the Rays didn't really suffer for it but it's still a trade that pisses me off to this day. Gaudin was a solid pitching prospect who to begin with was poorly handled by the team, getting promoted to the majors at 20 without any time in AAA and then jerked around by Lamar and Piniella, going up and down and switching between starter and reliever. He did struggle some, not surprising considering his age, inexperience, and the team's inability to decide what they wanted to do with him, but he was still the kind of guy the Rays needed to keep and try to use in the development of a decent team. Instead he was traded away for a completely useless piece of junk. It boggles the mind how any GM, however incompetent, could think a trade like that would help the team.
