There's a certain logic whereby Prince Philip, and thus Charles and his sons, are Greek – but they all seem pretty British to me.

The British race itself is a fairly mongrel breed anyway. Go back far enough and they're all French or German or Danish.

I have the same problem, when people ask me what I am, it's American and they still ask "I mean where were your ancestors from" and my only thought is America. I have to go back to before there was a United States of America to find an answer and that's just too many generations for me to care about.

I have to go back to the early 18th century, (German one side, Welsh/English the other) but it's the going back that is fun!

Although this sentiment may be somewhat related to the fact that I want to be a historian, and also that I have a pack-rat mentality.

I'm sure everyone here knows that you can often tell from your surname what your patrilineal ancestry is. Of course there are cognates for many common surnames, and people often used to change to the local one when they moved around, but it's still a start.

The one I've always found funny is Costello. Could be equally Irish or Italian.

Oh, and Lee of course. But the Korean Lees seem to way outnumber the English ones.

That is pretty impressive. Not tracing your ancestry back that far, but actually not having a single side of a single branch born in a different country.

On each side, I have to go to great-grandparents to get a country other than America, and I thought that was somewhat remarkable. I have one relative that fought in the Civil War.

One side of my family started coming over in the early to mid 1600's and finished up coming over by the late 1600's while the other side came over in the 1930's.

One side of my family was entirely born outside the U.S. until my mother's generation (and her parents came from two different countries). My father's side is white trash who have no idea when they got here. Long-time readers of the site can guess which side I identify with.

Bizarre - the ancestor with whom I share my surname also immigrated here (or to Williamsburg, VA, to be exact) in 1717. Bonus points to anyone who can identify this person, and triple bonus points if it turns out to be the same guy as Stankus' ancestor.

My people settled in the Germanna colonies as indentured servants, passage paid by the governor. The colonies would be in modern Fredericksburg, or near by.

Not particularly notable, unless you like Huguenot history, and even then, I don't know really how notable.

Through another branch of my family (my paternal grandmother's), I am descended from Robert "Potato Hole" Woodson. Notorious train robber/serial killer Jesse James is also descended from old Potato Hole, so I have that going for me.

Through my maternal grandmother I am descended from British Admiral John Benbow.

I realize nobody really cares about this stuff but me.

I'm not really directly descended from anyone that anyone would find interesting but one of my ancestors did get raped by Flynn and another married the daughter of the richest man in probably the world at that time so I do have that going for me.
