The other day, I was watching the visiting announcing crew call a Kansas City Royals game, when Jeff Francoeur came to the plate. Before it even began, I knew what was coming. The announcers started to praise Francoeur. You know, it was all the usual stuff—great leader, plays terrific defense, bat coming around, wonderful guy. And, suddenly, a question came to mind.

I felt when free agency started: Lohse...is the best pitcher available.

The problem here is that he is 34 years old and is represented by Scott Boras

It is kind of bizarre that a guy who pitched as well as Loshe did last year is still unemployed as the Spring Training schedule starts.

He turned down a one year 13.3 mil qualifying deal from the Cardinals, so he's clearly looking for more than that.

He had a "free agent to be year" that has got to be scaring off some suitors. He's 34 years old, has posted 3 good years in his career and had two horrible seasons in 2010 and 2009. I imagine he would have no problem finding a two year contract in the $30mil range, but I have a feeling he is looking for more than that, both in years and dollar amount.

He had a "free agent to be year" that has got to be scaring off some suitors. He's 34 years old, has posted 3 good years in his career and had two horrible seasons in 2010 and 2009. I imagine he would have no problem finding a two year contract in the $30mil range, but I have a feeling he is looking for more than that, both in years and dollar amount.

I'm not saying clubs should cave on him or that he should just take any offer. Just that it's kind of odd that he's still out there at this point in time (though I guess Jackson was in a similar boat last year).

How reasonable would it be for the Cards to work a sign-and-trade with a team to build competent SS depth since Furcal still seems hurt? Yes, a first rounder would be better, but if Lohse sits out until the June draft, I think the compensation requirement goes away, and a team could sign him to a 3-year deal and the Cards would get bupkus. Not looking for a star, but if a team has a $10M league-average SS on a short contract, it seems a solid move for the Cards.

If I'm Lohse, I'm content to sit tight until after the draft. By then, the contenders and pretenders will have sorted themselves out, the signing team won't lose a pick and the media will have hyped Lohse into a "Can he save the...?" narrative.

If given the choice of a one-year deal with a crappy team now (protected pick) or a 3-year deal (2 1/2 years, I guess) with a first place team at the all-star break, seems almost in no-brainer territory. The only question is... does he stay in shape privately, or risk injury/exposure by signing with an independent league team?

The Angels have said they're not interested in Lohse, but I wish they'd reconsider. Vargas, Hanson and Blanton at the back end of the rotation doesn't fill me with confidence.

You're good with Blanton, all my Phillies friends swore up and down that not only is he better than Lohse, but that he is an All Star pitcher with bad luck. My Philly friends be crazy.

Adding Lohse to the Angels SOUNDS like a good idea until you realize he's Kyle Lohse. He's awful.

Hanson and Blanton suck too, I get your point, but adding Lohse doesn't help, I don't think.

Isn't that a stretch? 7th in Cy Young last year career 97 era+, usually good for about 180ip. He's more or less the definition of a number 3 pitcher, if you can slot him in the fourth spot, you should have a very strong rotation.

Huh? Your "Philly friends" must not be from Philly. The best you'll hear about Blanton around here is that he was okay. Generally, the assessment is much lower than that.

The Indians and Jays both have protected picks, although the Jays don't need any more pitchers. The Red Sox might not be terrible either and could probably use another SP, and they have a protected pick.

Cleveland makes the most sense. They've already come this far. Go all in and be 2012-2013 Winter MLB Free Agent Bargain Champion.

I don't see C.J. Wilson being awful, but Lohse is at least as good as any of the last three, and his contract is looking more and more reasonable by the day. Between the questionable starting pitching and the still-questionable relief pitching, my optimism going into this season is... questionable.

Ok. On a one year deal, maybe. My comment was more about not wanting him to get a 3-year deal and be a #4 starter at $12 million per year.

He is 34 and I don't trust Mike Butcher to do anything but make him worse.

I'd prefer they keep the $ and put Brad Mills and Garret Richards out there when Blanton/Hanson blow up. Lohse isn't worth the years.

2/30? Blech. You're probably right, but if I rooted for a team that wanted to spend any money, I wouldn't want him at that price. He seems like a prime candidate to regress.
