Read More...Over the first 12 days of September, Langford went the distance against the Yankees, Orioles and Royals. Langford, who wore No. 22, had thrown 22 consecutive complete games.
Finally, on Sept. 17, in a game at Arlington, Texas, A’s manager Billy Martin marched to the mound after Langford had pitched 8⅔ innings and signaled for lefty reliever Bob Lacey to come on. Lacey induced a groundout from Buddy Bell to save Langford’s 17th victory.

Actually, the shot to the head wasn't as bad as others. The slow motion was scary, but he sat up right away - which has to be a good sign.
Hope he's OK. I like him a lot.
AND she's funny. Her Twitter feed is almost as entertaining as his.
Also, oh my: http://www.fantasybaseballdugout.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/amanda-mccarthy.jpg
The base-coach thing was knee-jerk. The helmets they wear would have had no effect at all on the guy who got killed, who got hit in the neck.
Very classy, Angels. Thamk you.
I immensely enjoy how tight the rivalry is between these teams - so many low scoring games, closely matched series, etc --- yet it remains both low key and very sportsmanlike.
PS Good Gawd, she is hot
Give basically 99% of young reasonably women a makeup team, professional photographer, an editor, a good lighting team, and a fashion team and you'll get a hot photo virtually 100% of the time.
I don't know about that. Granted the professionals do a great job but their not miracle workers. Most women (American woman at least), even those that fall into the 'young reasonably' category, are carrying around 15-20 extra pounds that aren't doing them any good. You would need to throw in three months with a professional trainer to get anything that looks like the picture in #7.
More like most fashion models and celebrities are abnormal by 15 to 20 pounds.
Well, maybe since this happened.
I think in a situation like this, even the most bitter rivals would react much the same way. Nobody wants to see another player hurt like that. I hope McCarthy doesn't have any lasting effects.
Anyway, that's your BDC Medical Advice of the Day. Yes, I have a doctorate, in American Literature. And I hope McCarthy is fine and recovers without aftereffects. He's a good player who has made the most of his talent, and he's cute enough for that absolutely smoking wife of his, thanks for the heads-up on her, everybody.
People? Like, more than one?
No, it was the same guy, but separate incidents.
"Chapman staggered to his feet, instinctively took two steps toward first and then, shaking like an aspen, dropped in a heap, his left eye hanging out of its socket." (source)
huh, i read sowell's 'the pitch that killed' and don't remember anything about his eye. either i blocked it out or he didn't mention it.
Weird: I haven't read Sowell's book, but I knew I remembered that (horrifying) detail from somewhere.
I wonder if that's one of those little touches that showed up later, but wasn't mentioned in contemporary accounts (because it didn't happen).
I remember the 2001 Yankees being similarly gracious when Bryce Florie got hit in the face at Fenway.
And I too have heard the eye socket thing about Chapman previously.
I hope no Reds fans inadvertantly wandered into the middle of this thread.
Brandon McCarthy underwent surgery after being hit in the head by a line drive on Wednesday.
The surgery was deemed necessary after a CT scan revealed an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture. McCarthy had another scan Thursday which showed improvement from his previous scan while the epidural hemorrhage has subsided. Per a statement from A's general manager Billy Beane, McCarthy is "stable, awake and alert," and currently resting in the critical care unit of the hospital.

Now consider that Junior Seau allegedly suffered 1,200 concussions.
A hacky sack? Are you sure? Those things weight less than 2 ounces.
Well, it was thrown relatively hard at a vulnerable point on the head.
I hope he's ok. I'm sure he's in great hands.
I can see a hacky sack doing some damage. It's like a miniature sandbag.
And Bob is right, don't move the guy.
Best wishes to Brandon.
EDIT: Okay, just watched the video and it is remarkably like the one in my story. Except my guy was out cold, and for awhile. But same sort of location and turn in the pitcher and hit in the same side of the head. Scary.
