Drugs, booze, cheap motels
Women don’t exactly throw themselves at minor leaguers either, contrary to what the movie Bull Durham might have told you.
Last year in the minor leagues alone, at least 40 players were suspended for using performance-enhancing or recreational drugs
Each Baseball team has what, five or six minor league affiliates? Each of those have 25 roster spots? So we're talking about a 1% positive test rate? I'm not sure Mormons would be that clean living.
There are exceptions, but for the most part it is a lonely, selfish mini-universe where the ethos of “one for all, all for one” is as foreign as a Frenchman.
90% of minor leaguers make 1-2K per month for 5 months. I don't see how they afford recreational drugs, PED's or booze.
I'm not sure what's secret nor shameful about it. Possibly it would be shameful but, short of Tonya Harding style escapades, "trampling" your AAA teammates won't get you to the majors any faster. For sure I'd rather sacrifice your left arm than my own to get to the majors but, alas, it doesn't work that way.
Cobb Field (since replaced) in Billings was charming. Wooden bleachers, boosters running the snack bar, and super cheap beer. It was a lovely place.
There's no evidence to indicate performance enhancing drugs are dangerous to people's health let alone 'incredibly dangerous' as stated in the article. performance enhancing drugs are, in general, reasonably benign.
Wow... Someone REALLY hates Baseball.
Are you kidding me? We live in a country where ASADA helps to sweep a massive drug scandal under the carpet, League players defecate in hotel hallways when not urinating on croupiers, Rules players lose their careers to substance abuse while needing to be told by the AFL that paying hush money to sexual assault victims is wrong, we immortalise a cricketer for his ability to sink cans on international flights, Wallabies with drunken burglary charges, can't catch, can't bowl (go team!), on and on and on and you are going to point the finger at American baseball players? Nice article Pot, I've sent the link to Kettle for you.
Your article may have some truths, but it is also exaggerated and misleading. For example, you mention that nearly 40 players in the minor leagues were busted for drugs. You failed to mention that there are nearly 6000 players in the minor league system. That equates to less than 1%. Also, US Baseball has what is widely considered the most stringent drug testing program in entire world of sport. What % of ALF players would be busted if they had as strict a drug program as US Baseball? My guess is considerably more than 1%.
Oh look, another hatchet job story on baseball. A whole 40 players got nailed for performance enhancing drugs, out of the thousands that play major/minor league baseball. Sounds like an epidemic to me!
Can I play?
Actually the "cheap, soulless apartment" appeals to me. I like living up high and to live on the 16th floor would be heaven. Being a minimalist the white and grey paint and black & white framed posted would be ideal.
Sounds like someone missed out on free tickets...
