The Orioles have played like contenders for 200 games now. Isn’t that enough?
Is anyone anywhere saying the Orioles aren't a good team right now? Laws comment was last year, has he said anything on the subject this year?
The Baltimore Orioles' 2012 season was a great story, but built on an unsustainable foundation of luck and bullpen performance; they did nothing to upgrade the team this winter and may be overreliant on players who are likely to deliver less value this year. Their best hopes for a step forward are Chris Tillman, whose stuff was better in the second half, and Matt Wieters, who is about two years late on that big offensive breakout I had predicted for him.
IT's pretty early. I've got MLB network now and I've been watching a lot of Quick Pitch and MLB Tonight. I'm seeing lots of sparse crowds everywhere, even Yankee Stadium. Looks like a bad year for attendance so far, based on my unscientific polling.
I think it is more that Peter Angelos so alienated Orioles fans that they are ambivalent, at best, about putting their money in the owner's pocket, even if they still follow the team and are pleased by the turn around.
Going by an enormous sample size of one, I can say that the Angelos effect was huge, but it's been lessened in great part by the makeup of this team's roster, mostly farm products, trade acquisitions, and low profile free agents. He's also helped by having kept a much lower profile in recent years.
Of course you might say that all of the above translates into "winning heals all wounds", and there may be something to that, but I don't think it's all of it. Maybe it's just the return of the cartoon bird onto the cap.
